CHRM-101 Lesson 4
Chapter 4
If we could sayone way humanity improved back then, we could credit language. The language the olden days had can be decoded now and can be used as a way to understand the older people's thoughts about the time back then. Using that knowledge, we can make guesses on other parts of life.
There are two kinds of writings. One is a flat writing. It is basically a bunch of complex symbols standing for stuff. The second kind is based around a alphabet. The letters of the alphabet are organized into groups called 'words'. This is what we see today.
The earliest alphabet known to humanity is the Phoenician Alphabet. It is a old model for the modern alphabet. It dates back to 1050 B.C.E. It didn't have vowels though. Those were left for the reader to find out.
Later, other alphabets like the Latin, Greek, and English alphabet had other symbols to represent the vowels. For example, in the Latin alphabet, V was used as a consonant and a vowel. U was only used to produce the special 'U' sound. It was adopted much later.
Suprisingly, the modern alphabet has changed very little through the 3 millennia. The symbols and pronounciations may have changed, but you can still recognize the similarities between them. It is very suprising it is even recognizable though.
Incantations are important to magic. These words excert their power only when spoken correctly. They are often one or two words long, and have European Latin bases. Not all spells have them, but most do. Latin is the oldest language known to wizards, so most spells are based off it.
For example, lets take Levioso. It can move a object up and down without any effort. The Latin root 'levis' means light of weight. This makes sense with this spell. All spells that have latin roots have roots that connect to the effect or meaning of the spell.
You also have to be precise with the wording. In the English Language, if you said 'Pass me the better' instead of butter, people would understand. But they would be confused at the same time. This is not how it works in the magical world. Sometimes, if the wording messes up, there is a small backfire. But sometimes, there can be explosions.
The Fire-Making Charm is Incendio. It literally means 'fire' in Latin. Its wand movement is 'A curved flick up and down'. You need low to very high willpower depending on the distance and the difficulty to ignite the object. You need less concentration for simple light, and more for a stream of fire. It will help develop your focus. It is also one of the oldest known spells.
The Locomotion Charm is Locomotor. It makes objects 'fly'. In truth, they are just hovering above the ground. It is used to move items from one place to another. The wand movement is a full circle with an upward flick toward the target at the end, then pointed where the object should go. You need Moderate to Very High willpower depending on the size and weight of the object. You need very low concentration though.
You can actually cast another spell while casting the Locomoter Spell. You just have to remember to still focus on the Locomoter Charm. It is hard for beginners, but gets easier with practice.
