Expelliarmus (Disarming Charm)
Chapter 15
Pronunciation: ex-PELL-ee-ARE-muss
Description: Causes whatever the victim is holding to fly away from his/her grasp. Also able to knock out an opponent if used too forcefully. Harry Potter's signature spell.
Seen/Mentioned: Used multiple times from the second book onwards.
Etymology: Probably a combination of Latin expello, meaning "expel", and arma, meaning "weapon".
Notes: Mentioned in Doctor Who starring David Tenant and Freema Agyeman, second episode of the third series. It was also used differently in the Prisoner of Azkaban PS2 video game, in which a pink-colored shield is conjured to protect against jinxes.
