Week 1 - Introduction

Chapter 1
**General Information
~ Class is in the Room of Runes
- take great care with the older books here
- only use witch light for light --> Lumos Permaneo - jab forward; Extinguish
with Nox
- place books on book holders for reading
~ There are notes on how to download different fonts to your browser for
viewing runes
~There is a suggestion one should be 14+ to take this class
~ The Rune Dictionary is a required textbook for this class

**Syllabus info
~Will be focusing on the Elder Futhark - the oldest rune script
- the individual letters
- meanings and interpretation
- uses in magic
~ There will be a vocabulary session at the end of each lesson
~ After individual runes --> ideograms, translation, spell work

**What are Ancient Runes
~Ancient Runes - writing systems that are no longer in common use
~Alphabet - collection of symbols used to represent sounds of a language in
written form - date back over 3,000 years
~ Current systems in use: Latin alphabet, Chinese, Japanese, Cyrillic

**Uses of Runes
~purpose of writing systems: fix thoughts and speech
- allows thoughts to travel time and space
- allow for study of the language
- not as common a type of magic --> can be stronger and longer lasting

**Testing Runes for Magic
~Enhantment Revealing Charm - Specialis Revelio
-Potential Results of the spell
`No result - no magic in the runes: either successfully deactivated, or never
activated to begin with
`Amber/Bronze Glow - successfully activated rune set
` Red Glow - Compromised in some way: consult expert
` Pale Blue Glow - some form of enchantment/spell on the runes: proceed
with caution, if at all; consult expert
