Inanimate transformations mean alteration of a non-living object to another non-living object. While Animate objects mean transforming a living being to another living being. Living things could be transformed into inanimate objects but they would actually return to their present state after a certain period of time.You need a lot of concentration and will power to perform Animate Transformations. Wizards who can turn them into animals are called Animagus. Lupin, from Harry Potter could change himself into a werewolf. Animagi is a tough and complicated Transfiguration taught in third years briefly.
