Charms Lesson 1 Summary
Chapter 1
In the old Egyption days, magic was used more freely. Egyptians used their magic to protect tombs and treasures. The Egyptians were only one of the tribes that knew magic back then. After that, the creation of wands started. The oldest wand-making family is the Ollivander family. They begun making wands and studying wandcraft starting in 382 B.C.E.
Later, during the 1000 C.E's, Wizards and Witches started seperating from Muggles. It started slowly at first, then it started getting massive. Reasons for this can include the Witch Trails. To save themselves, the Witches places simple Flame-Freeze Charms which only made them tickle. They pretended to groan and wail in agony to satisfy their Muggle captors.
Finally, in 1689, The International Statue of Secrecy declared that Wizards would no longer do magic in the Muggle world. This was because some Witches got mad, and as the Witch Trails ended, they started killing their Muggle captors. The Ministry claims this was to "Keep both the communities safe from eachother". Following this law, The Ministry expected each country government to keep their magical and non-magical community seperated. Even though it was declared in 1689, the law took a full 3 years to fully come into action.
After The International Statue of Secrecy was passed, Muggles began thinking magic was a legend. From where they were, they only knew about magic from stories passed along and made up. The magic they read about, and sometimes even see, is considered a hallucanation in their minds. Sometimes, Wizards sometimes do real magic in front of a Muggle. The Muggle then has evidence about magic. Thankfully, The Accidental Magic Reversal Squad takes care of that.
The Ministry was scared about there younger population giving them away too. They passed the Decree for the Reasonable Restriction of Underage Sorcery in 1875. The law makes it clear that children under the age of 17 cant do magic. But, it also has one acception. If the life of the wizard or the Muggle is in mortal danger, the Wizard or Witch is permitted to perform magic.
It is throughly dangerous not to follow that law. When you are under 17, you have something called "The Trace" on you. The Trace can detect magic used outside Hogwarts and Hogsmeade. If you perform magic with The Trace on you, you will be caught. You will face bad consequences.
Wands were first made of Wood and Lead, no bigger than a hippogriffs feather. The Wizarding Population was grateful for this discovery, so they could channel their magic, not have it spark up uncontrollably. Before wands, Wizards and Witches almost gave the Wizarding World away! Some major events happened to get into Muggle Mythology.
Wands always have a powerful magical creatures core inside them. This helps channel your power through the wand. The good thing about modern wands is that they don't explode randomly, so you can experiment more! There are many gestures in magic too. Magic isn't just words, its complicated!
A basic spell can be the Wand-Lighting Spell. This spell illuminates the tip of your wand. The activation word is 'Lumos'. We believe it was discovered in 1722 by Levina Monkstanley, a Ministry Employee. She might have casted this spell while trying to find her dropped quill. Great job Levina!
The color of the light depends on the willpower and focus. If they are at the max, your wand eill turn scarlet. If it's perfect, the light will be yellow. If you are failing, it will be pale white. The wand movement for the spell is a counter-clockwise loop.
The Wand-Extinguishing Charm is 'Nox'. You do not need to put any willpower or focus into this. Notice that this spell only works for the holder. It is called a 'Private Spell'. You can't cast it at other people's wands.
