Shadows in the Amber

written by Pho Chellia

This book is based off a dream I had once, but with a twist. In my opinion it's pretty cool, though you'll have to read it to find out. Enjoy the first chapter and I will be updating this book once a week depending on my schedule. Sorry I have forgotten for the last month or two, wow I'm stupid. Thanks :D

The Two Disappearances

Chapter 1
I remember that dark, cold night. My mother and I had been fast asleep at my grandmother's house. Everything was peaceful, there was no sound but a small buzzing of the heater. I wasn’t so sure why we were at my grandparents’ house. My mom wouldn’t tell me. As I lay face up in bed, I dream of a small abandoned house. My little sister and I were outside of the old house playing hide-and-seek in the breezy fall air, leaves dancing along in the wind. The sunset shone a bright orange as I counted down from 20 to find my sister who had been hiding in the small shed behind the old house.

“...3, 2, 1! Ready or not here I come!” I looked first behind the dead bushes, the the tall grey, rotting tree that looked as if it could fall at any moment. I was surprised to see that she wasn’t hiding underneath our favorite spot: a small trapdoor hidden beneath the mossy dog statue. The dog’s ear had broken off for the statue was so old. I opened the trapdoor slowly and looked inside. The shelves were covered in all kinds of books and a couch was littered by spiderwebs in the corner. The bat we had named Betty was sleeping soundly on the couch. She was a very sweet bat, and everyday we had given her an apple. I left the juicy red fruit by her small head and exited the room to continue looking for my sister.
After about five minutes of searching, I heard a ear splitting screech from the shed. I was horrified. Shaking, I raced faster than the speed of sound. My sister was in trouble and I would do anything to get her out of it. I swung open the door ripping them from their hinges and leaving them in the dust. I frantically looked around for my sister. “Leah!” I shouted. Tears started burning in my eyes blurring my vision as I scanned the room. There was no trace of her. “Leah!” I half shouted-half choked. “No. Please no. If this is a joke it’s not funny!” I said to nothing. “Alright, the jig is up! Come out! Cut that out! Please, stop. Leah I can’t live without you!” Nothing happened. No sound. No movement. Everything was still. I collapsed to the floor, tears pouring from my eyes. The image was gripping my mind. It didn’t matter how much I wanted it to go, the image kept playing again and again. I haven’t seen my sister since.
Suddenly, a sound of shattering glass jerked me out of the dream. I was back in the room at my grandmother’s house, and my mom was snoring like a bear. My heart thumped painfully in my chest. I resolved it was best to pretend I was still sleeping until I could figure out what was going on. There was another smash of glass and I could tell my mom had woken up now.

“C’mon we gotta get out of here.” My mom whispered a hint of panic in her voice. She grabbed my hand and we raced to get out of the building. There was an untouched and secret glass door downstairs. All we had to do was get out and go straight to the woods. But the people who had broken in knew we were coming. As we raced up the hill they grabbed my mom and she let go of me. I rolled down the hill and into the woods. I saw her slowly shove her phone into her pants (it was her best hiding place at the time), careful not to be noticed, and I knew we could still communicate until she had gotten help . “RUN!” she shouted at me as more people raced towards me in the woods. I had never run so fast in my life. Really, running is an understatement. What I was doing was almost flying. I raced through the woods and met my grandma by the small lake. Then I collapsed onto the rocks. My tears running into the lake.
