A Broken Bottle
Chapter 4
Keira stared ahead at the black sky and stars, and her foot drummed against the side of her escape capsule. Her hands gripped the steering wheel in front of her, as she steered the pod to Earth. She had a landing area planned out, a few acres of flat land that was unoccupied. Quickly, Keira hit the atmosphere, sparks flying off the sides of her ship. She had taken the trip several times, but her heart still beat quickly, and her palms were sweaty against the wheel. She spiraled downwards, as she hit the ground just a few inches from where she had planned to. She stepped outside, and inspected her ship. There was a large dent on one side. Keira sighed.‘Great, now I can’t get back to the satellite!’ she thought nervously. Keira began to walk over to Ellis’ house, knowing that she would have to find out about the young girl before she could complete any missions for her. When she arrived at the girl’s house, Keira peered through the open window by her house. She saw the girl eating a granola bar on her bed, bruises clouding over her face. Keira thought ‘That’s probably why I’ve been sent here. I suppose Mika did that to her.’ She saw Ellis stiffen and get ready to turn around. She dove into a bush, hoping that she hadn’t seen her. When Ellis turned around, Keira figured it would be safe to get up again. Quickly, she decided that she should go to Mika’s house.
Turning around, she walked through the neighborhood, heading toward the little brown house that sat on the edge. She walked around, following a hoard of voices coming from a room. She opened a window just enough to watch the scene play out, to make out the muffled voices. A woman with tangled brown hair and an overwhelming intensity in her eyes scolding a young child with a misshapen face. Keira heard screaming and yelling. The woman grabbed a half-broken glass bottle with sharp spikes on the end, and held it above the boy. As the woman brought the bottle down, an older boy dived in front of him,the glass making large cuts on his face. They older boy, Mika grabbed the younger by the hand and ran out, on hand clamped over his cheek, blood oozing through his fingers. Keira closed the window and slid down the wall onto the ground, her knees pulled up to her chest. A tear leaked out of her eye and fell down her face. ‘No.’ she thought ‘How could I ever kill that boy? Especially now that I know what he’s dealing with.’ She held her hand over her face, feeling as if she were sinking into the ground.
