Chapter One: The Girl In The Shadows
Chapter 2
I got up off the dirt floor. My back ached. "Come on lazy bones, it's already five 'o' clock!" Tiff said. Our school started at seven thirty but she thinks we need lots of time to prepare. "I'm up, I'm up," I said as I clawed my way up. We had enough money for basic materials. Toothbrush, toothpaste, combs, food. Thanks to a Tiff. I started getting ready. I washed my face in the lake outback. I didn't need people to know about my home life. As I was about to grab an apple off the tree I saw Tiff running towards me in sheer panic. "Cops!" She screamed. We sprinted back inside and grabbed our stuff. We put them into paper bags Tiff got when she bought stuff. We grabbed all the food off the tree branches and ran behind the big willow tree. It's trunk or three feet wide. We had to stay in the shadows or else they would see us. "I don't see anyone," one of them said. "Hm, I thought I heard voices," the other said. "Wait. What's that?" The first officer started walking towards our tree. I hid under the bush, careful not to make too much noise. "There's a girl in the shadows!" The officer ran towards Tiff. Oh my god the twins! They must've hid when they heard the cops. Or they got caught. Tiff was about to run when the officer grabbed her. "What're you doing here?" Tiff was about to cry. "This is our home! You can't take us away!" The officer seemed to have a sadness inside him. Then it went away. "Us?" Tiff nodded. "Me and my family." The officer looked confused. "But this house has been abandoned for years. We were coming to inspect to see if it was good to knock down." Tiff looked down. "I know. We lost our house and we found this one. Please don't knock it down or kick us out!" The officer shook his head. "I'm sorry. I can't just leave you. You will go to trial and if you can plead your case, they will let you stay. For a price. For now though, I have to take you into custody." Him and Tiff were walking away. I peeked out, and saw her looking at me. Handcuffed.
