Bowtruckles
Chapter 3
Welcome to the third lesson! Today, we will be studying Bowtruckles, as you can probably tell from the title. As usual, before we begin, I have a few announcements to make.
- I will be creating a group for us to hang out and help each other out with homework or just chat.
- I will start creating homeworks which are quizzes and the actual quiz will be in a seperate chapter to the lesson.
Now, let's begin.
Bowtruckles are tree-guardians that generally guard trees that are growing for special magical purposes, for example, wand trees. Wand trees are trees that are made of special types of wood, so then small quantities of wood can be removed, ready to make wands.
They, Bowtruckles, are mainly found in the west of England, Southern Germany, and certain Scandinavian forests.
It's maximum height is eight inches, therefore making it hard to spot. But it is made of bark and twigs with two small brown eyes, making it almost to spot. Read the following description from Harry Potter Wiki.
'The Bowtruckle can be found in western England, southern Germany, and certain Scandinavian forests. A Bowtruckle serves as a tree guardian for its home tree, which is usually a tree whose wood is of wand quality (such as a Wiggentree). The twig-like fingers are well adapted for digging out wood lice in trees, and can also be used as a weapon against a foe when aimed at the eyes. It is generally a peaceful creature, but will become violent if anything threatens its tree, or even to itself. To take leaves or wood from a Bowtruckle's tree, one would have to offer it wood lice or fairy eggs as a distraction.'
It states above that an offering of woodlice would distract the Bowtruckle guarding the tree. The Bowtruckle loves to eat insects, especially woodlice. An offering of woodlice or fairy eggs should placate the Bowtruckle long enough to remove wand-wood from it's tree.
Bowtruckles like to hide themselves in the roots of trees but make it possible to easily climb out. If a tree surgeon attempts to harm the tree, the Bowtruckles will climb out and try to gouge out their eyeballs with the two sharp claws they have on each twig arm. They have two claws on each twig "hand" which are ready to attack anyone who attempts to harm the tree.
In the first lesson, I taught you about Ministry of Magic classifications. The Bowtruckle is XX in the X classification, but in the other classification, they are classed as a Beast as they cannot talk and contribute to laws etc. but they are solid and don't come into the Spirits category.
That is all for today's lesson. Now, the homework will be listed below.
- Read about Gnomes in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.
- Do the Bowtruckle quiz following this lesson.
- Write an essay on the appearance of the Bowtruckle.
Look out for the next lesson!
