The Mind of a Natural Legilimens
Chapter 3
While a natural Legilimens understands everyone, they often feel that they are understood by no one. The stigma around Legilimency being a tool of dark wizardry contributes to this. Legilimens are often seen as invasive, controlling, and alterior-motivated and this kind of perception is especially projected onto those who are naturally very gifted at Legilimency. Not to say that natural Legilimens can’t be very manipulative, if they chose. But most natural Legilimens respect privacy and keep what they've learned to themselves – perhaps as a result of their high empathy, which drives their gift in the first place.
While the power of natural Legilimency might sound appealing, it is not always a blessing for those who have the gift. It can be quite lonely, to have something that differentiates them from other people. Being aware of the contents of other people’s minds can result in painfully learning what the people around Legilimens about them.
They can also stumble upon thoughts that are products of other people’s emotional anguish. A person in emotional pain is just as distracting to a Legilimens to the one experiencing it. They cannot stop to hear some thoughts, especially the painful ones, since they are like desperate cries for the attention that draw to the natural Legilimens like a magnet.
Natural Legilimens can sometimes develop very strong bonds with people and feel a reel connection to others. They often find themselves caught up in other people's problems, hoping that if they help others they wont have to experience other people's frustrations. This often becomes a negative cycle. This is especially true with people they are closest to - they are known to drop everything and come to their family's aid regardless of circumstance. While this kind of altruism is seen as a good quality by most people, it can negatively affect a Legilimens by preventing them from focusing inward and working towards their own goals in life.
Natural Legilimens often attempt to hide their powers as best they can, or at least lead people to believe they know less than they actually do. Sometimes outed Legilimens strive to appear ditzy and simple-minded, so that those that know their minds are being read feel less uncomfortable with how much they believe the legilimens will intellectually infer. However the “dreamy” traits that many natural Legilimens acquire can also be the result of having so much information that they are forced to take in. This can cause them to struggle to stay focused in every day life situations.
There are exceptions to the reach of a natural Legilimens They may have a hard time reading a master occulemense in the same way a very advanced legilimens does. Natural Legilimens also have trouble reading those who are not 100% human - werewolves, vampires, house-elves, dwarves, and goblins. The later is for the best, as goblins often hold secrets and the keys to the fortunes in vaults (one of the reasons why goblins are employed in those establishments in the first place).
