Chapter 4
- Protego horribilis -
is the incantation to a stronger version of the Shield Charm which protects a very large area against highly Dark Magic. It causes anything within the ranges of Dark Magic to rebound off the shield.
- Protego Maxima -
is a stronger version of the Shield Charm that, when cast in combination with Fianto Duri and Repello Inimicum, conjures up an almost impregnable magical protection barrier.
- Protego totalum -
is the incantation of a protective enchantment used to defend a certain area for an extended period of time . It’s presumably a variation of Protego.
The Dancing Feet Spell - Tarantallegra
is a charm used to force another person’s legs to begin dancing uncontrollably. The spell requires a clear, unobstructed view of the target to be successfully cast. This spell has its origins in Italy but is best remembered for its improper usage by warlock Zaccaria Innocenti who is credited with conjuring a ‘dance’ within Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. It is mainly used to make a victim do something hilarious, but it can be also be used in duelling.
The Jelly-Legs Curse, - Locomotor Wibbly
is a spell that causes the victim’s legs to collapse.
The Impediment Jinx - Impedimenta
also known as the Impediment Hex is a jinx that slows the target . It is only temporary , lasting about ten seconds . Although it is capable of freezing a wasp in mid-air , it is ineffective against lethifolds . The jinx will usually simply immobilize a target , it can also be used to throw a target backward or simply decrease the velocity of the victim’s movement , and can also levitate them .
- Densaugeo -
is a hex which causes the teeth to elongate at a grotesque, alarming rate . The Shrinking Charm can be used to counteract this spell.
The Shrinking Charm . - Reducio
is a charm that enables a witch or wizard to decrease the apparent physical size of the target, both internally and externally . It also can act as the counter-spell for the Engorgement Charm, causing the Engorged object to return to its original size .
- Mutatio Skullus -
is the incantation to a hex which mutates the victim; for example, growing extra heads.
- Entomorphis -
is the incantation of a jinx that could be used to induce insect-like qualities upon a victim for a short period of time . It deprives them of their ability to speak, forcing them to crawl about and endowing them with feelers.
Note on nonverbal spells
A nonverbal spell is a spell which is performed without saying the incantation out loud. Performing spells non-verbally is very difficult and requires a good deal of practice, as it requires concentration and mental discipline alone. One must learn to focus their attention on the performance of the spell, convincing themselves that they are mouthing the words when not. The sensation of this kind of spell mastery is that of feeling the spell is on the tip of ones tongue.
