Magical Beasts
Chapter 1
Foreword
This book is all about magical creatures of all shapes, sizes and color. I would advise any muggle not to go looking for these creatures unless they wish to die a most painful death. Although some creatures may be kind, others can kill you with a single glance (literally). In the foreword I am going to take the time to introduce the wizarding world to any muggle reading this book. Magical children ages 11-18 spend most of their days at Hogwarts school of witchcraft and wizardry. Hogwarts is somewhat like regular school, as there are core classes such as potions, transfiguration, defense against the dark arts, astronomy, charms, and history of magic. Then there are the classes you can chose to take such as divination, arithmancy (which we have noted that students who are strong logically and mathematically typically enjoy), muggle studies, ancient ruins, and many more. The students also have lunch period and free period.
Hogwarts is also different than regular schools in many ways. First, instead of regular school sports they play quidditch. Quidditch is played with four balls, the quaffle which is tossed around by chasers to score goals each worth ten points, the two bludgers which zoom around hitting players (it is the beaters job to keep these balls away from their teammates) and finally, the golden snitch. This ball is very small and fast. It is the seeker’s job to catch the snitch and when the snitch is caught the team whose seeker catches it is awarded 150 points and the game is over. There is an extremely long backstory to the sport but I find no need to go on any longer, if you want to learn more you can check out Quidditch Through the Ages by Kennilworthy Whisp.
Another difference is the houses. There are four houses - Gryffindor which prizes bravery, Hufflepuff which prizes kindness, Slytherin which prizes determination and finally, Ravenclaw which prizes wit. Also each house can win or lose house points from professors. At the end of the term the house that has the most points receives the house cup and gets a feast in their honor. There are seven years in Hogwarts and each gets progressively harder. As you get older you will take O.W.L.s and N.E.W.T.s which determines what jobs you can apply for.
Once you are done with your schooling you can pick from a selection of jobs such as being an Auror, working at the ministry, be a shop owner in Hogsmeade or Diagon Alley, professional Quidditch player, or many other options.
There is also a special currency that wizards use. The different money is called bronze knuts, silver sickles, and gold galleons. There are 17 silver sickles in one gold galleon, and 29 bronze knuts in one sickle. Gringots is the main wizarding bank. It is the second safest place to keep your treasures (Hogwarts is first). The people who have had their account longer have high security vaults at the bottom guarded by a blind dragon and many protective enchantments.
There are many different creatures around the globe and if I did an entry on all of them this book would probably be the longest book in existence. So I only picked a select few I thought were important. From the dragons of Romania to the giants in the Rockies, this book can tell you how to defeat vicious monsters and care for loving creatures.
Unicorn
Unless the unicorn is a baby unicorn it will only let girls get near it. The unicorn bleeds silvery blood and if you drink their blood you will live forever but will be cursed forever also.
House Elf
House elves are easy creatures to take care of. They are actually the ones taking care of you. They are forced to obey their master and never spill any secrets. They are completely loyal until you present them with clothing.
Hippogriff
They are very majestic and they know it. These creatures will attack anyone who does not approach them properly **cough cough** Draco **cough cough**. To approach a hippogriff, you have to bow, wait for the hippogriff to approve by bowing, then you can approach the creature.
Phoenix
The phoenix is easy to take care of and extremely beneficial. They can heal you from the deadliest venom with a single tear. Just don’t freak out if they burst into flames, it’s natural.
Owl
This is the most common wizarding pet. You can buy them in many places such as Diagon Alley. Owls deliver mail for you. Don’t worry if you don’t have enough money to get one before heading to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry because they provide school barn owls.
Basilisk
Basilisks are very difficult to defeat because of their massive size and the fact that if you look at them directly you will die instantly, and if you look at it indirectly you will get paralyzed. So unless you have a phoenix to blind the basilisk, you will have to fight blindfolded. The basilisk also has deadly venom that kills the victim within the minute. The only known cure to basilisk venom is phoenix tears which are extremely hard to find. So pretty much, if you get bit by a basilisk you’re done for.
Dragon
Dragons are massive, lizard like creatures that can breathe fire and have hide that can only be harmed by the most powerful spells. There are many ways to take on a dragon. Here are a few examples from the Goblet of Fire. Cedric got past the dragon by transfiguring a bolder into a dog to distract the dragon. Fleur charmed her dragon to sleep. Victor used a Conjunctivitus curse on the dragon, causing it to temporarily go blind. Finally, Harry used a summoning charm to summon his firebolt.
Boggart
“Luckily a simple charm exists to repel a Bogart.” –Professor Lupin. There is in fact a simple spell to repel these creatures. The incantation is “Riddikulus”. The Boggart is a shape shifter who takes the shape of its victim’s worst fear. When you speak the incantation then something funny happens to the creature.
Dementor
The spell to repel a dementor is extremely difficult. The incantation is Expecto Patronum which is easy to say but the patronus is hard to conjure. To conjure a patronus you have to recall your happiest memories. Dementors are tall cloaked figures that are completely black. They completely suck the happiness out of an area leaving their victims with no soul nor memories.
Werewolf
Werewolves have previously been bitten by a werewolf and are now infected. Every full moon they turn into a deadly wolf and completely lose their mind. Werewolves are able to keep cool by using wolfsbane potion every full moon. If you are bitten by a werewolf that is in wolf form you will either die, or become a werewolf too.
Merpeople
These half-fish, half-human creatures don’t exactly have a great relationship with the wizarding world. The creatures have grayish skin, dark green hair, yellow eyes and yellow teeth. They have long tentacles that they use to pull people underwater.
Giants
Giants are thought by wizards to be mean and vicious, but not all giants are this way. Grwap, Hagrid’s half-brother, is a very kind giant (after being trained by Hagrid). But there are actually some mean vicious giants. In Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix we are told that Hagrid and Madame Maxine go to the last remaining giant tribe to try and convince them to help their side. It was told that while they were there, there was a big giant fight in which the leader died and the giant who killed him took over as leader.
