A Few Weeks Before...
Chapter 3
(Just a short story- set a few weeks before the wedding)
August 14th, 1782
“And I will be sending Commander Laurens’ regiment to South Carolina throughout the week of Tuesday the 27th, to see off the British troops,” Washington finished giving the orders, and as the soldiers saluted and left the tent, Laurens lagged behind. “What is it, Laurens? You seem troubled,” Washington said. Laurens bit his lip,
“It’s about the regiment, sir. I’m afraid I will not be able to lead them, I have plans on the 25th of this month,” he said, scratching the back of his neck nervously. Washington raised an eyebrow,
“Can these… ‘Plans’ not wait?” he asked, slightly exasperated.
“I- You see- well- No, sir, the thing is… I’m getting married,” Laurens replied, turning slightly pink. Washington’s expression softened, and he almost smiled.
“To whom? Who is the lucky lady?” he asked, and Laurens blushed even more.
“Well, you see, sir, after weeks in court, umm, Alex and I are getting married.” Washington was shocked for a second, but then his face broke into a smile,
“Well can I just say congratulations. I will find another commander to lead the regiment, good luck.”
