Sure the reputation of Slytherins might not have been the best in the Second Wizarding World War.
But the Slytherins are clever. They chose to side with Voldemort because 1) Voldemort valued Pure- bloods 2) they thought siding with the most powerful would keep them alive 3) they wanted the best for themselves. Because of their beliefs they weren't the nicest people.
Also they're Ambious and cunning so they think of plans to get the most out of doing something. They also choose to " save their own necks instead of risking their neck for others".
The Slytherins weren't the nicest people because of their character traits. Draco wasn't all that bad, his parents were Death Eaters and he chose to side with the more powerful side.
