A New Companion

Chapter 8
The girl had dark red hair that reached her chest. Her tan-ish skin complimented her hair and her vibrant hazel eyes. She was in navy blue sweatpants and a gray tank top that read, 'I have nothing else to wear.' She was barefoot, and I noticed a tattoo of a dream-catcher on her arm. Her right eyebrow was raised.

"Hey Hunter. Who's your friend?" She asked. She shook her hair and glanced at me.

Hunter glanced at me, then went toward her. He grabbed her shoulder and pulled her away to the other side. He started whispering to the new girl. I figured he was telling her I was the 'chosen one.' I turned and looked around for the doll. I saw it crumpled on the ground. I bent down and grabbed it. I inspected it more. The more I looked at it, the more I remembered how much I played with this doll, and the more certain I was it was mine.

"She's WHO?!" I heard from behind me. I turned slightly and saw Hunter shushing her. Now I was positive they were talking about me. I rolled my eyes slightly and turned back around. I looked up and started looking around the store. The doll never left my hand. Even though I was looking at different things, I wasn't truly seeing them. My mind was stuck on everything that had happened so far.

"Lyra?" I heard Hunter call. I answered his call and walked toward the front of the store. There stood the girl and Hunter, the girl staring at me like I was a foreign artifact. When she realized she was staring, she cleared her throat and shook her head.

"So you're Lyra? Nice to meet you. I'm Adria. Not ARIA." She glared slightly when she said Aria. "Adria. A lot of people get it wrong, so I want to make sure you get it right. You can call me Ria. He does." Adria gestured to Hunter. Hunter chuckled. He looked at me, then glanced down. Confusion swam in his eyes.

"Why do you have a doll, Lyra?" I looked down and saw the doll still in my hands. I quickly explained how positive I was that this was my doll and showed them the writing. Ria cocked her head as she listened. Hunter just nodded while he was listening.

"If it's yours, you can take it. No one wants it anyway. Everyone says it's older than dirt." She paused. "Sorry, that probably shouldn't have been said."

I shrugged. "It's okay." I turned to Hunter. "What's the plan? How come we came here?"

Hunter looked at me in confusion, then realized what I meant. "O-Oh! Right right. Ria, I came to ask you something." He turned to Ria. Ria turned to him. Hunter gave her a detailed explanation. When he reached the part about the necklace, Ria sharply turned to me. She asked for proof. I quickly showed her, and she nodded. Apparently she didn't like being tricked. Hunter finished and asked if we could stay with her. "I'm going to take her to see Talyn tomorrow, it's too late today."

I looked out one of the windows to see dusk rapidly approaching. "Yeah, that's fine. Come on." Ria spoke, taking both of our hands and leading us upstairs.
