War Journal: A girl the age of 13 moves back to her homeland, Russia, when her father is placed there as a war general. She writes in a notebook everyday and as much as she can, planning on sending the journal back to her friends in America. War breaks out only months after she arrives with her older sister, Mikayla. The girls’ father dies in battle, and the older of the two goes to join the war and “avenge her father”. The girl is now left home alone, hidden from the war. She continues writing in her journal. The war is raging, and she worries her sister will never come home. Mikayla is fighting for the American side, and hasn’t said anything about being alive. One day, a year after arriving, an american bomb hits the girl’s neighborhood as she had started writing in the last page of her notebook. The building collapses, and the girl, Emil, is crushed. Finally, once the war is over, Mikayla tries to find her sister, but finds her dead body, and her notebook. She travels back home, and gives Emil’s notebook to her friends, and has to tell them everything. The story ends in Maria reading the notebook in first person, crying
