Chapter III: The answer
Chapter 3
When I woke up at 8 o’clock I hurried up to get into the living room. I really wanted to know what the letter ment and what would happen next. When I arrived the room was empty. It was Sunday morning and that meant my parents would not be awake before 10 am. So I decided to wait and watch TV until they would enter.
My mother still looked very sleepy – although she had slept that long. Maybe she had not been able to fall asleep as early as she had wanted because of the letter. She knew much more than I did – it might be worse than I expected.
I didn’t want to turture her so we first had breakfast and then I asked Dad, “Could you now tell me more about Hogwarts?” It sounded more rude than I wanted because I was afraid that they would postpone their detailed answer again.
“Well... Before I can tell you more about Hogwarts I have to explain something else.. Something that might seem weird and unbelievable to you.” A short pause followed in which my father obviously searched for the right words to explain everything.
Then he went on, “This isn’t so easy to explain and the reason why we couldn’t do it so far is that we were – and still are – afraid that you might hate us.”
And then they told me everything. After that I felt like I had to run as fast as I could as far away as possible. I just wanted to be alone so that nobody could see the tears running down my cheeks. I did not know how to feel like and what I should do next – I just didn’t know how to deal with everything my parents had told me.
‘Your father wasn’t able to look after a newborn so Dumbledore decided to alienate you from your father and send you to a family that would be able to love you and offer you a normal life’, Dad had told me.
That ment that they weren’t my real parents – that Dumbledore, the headmaster of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, arranged to bring me to the muggle world where the human beings lived without any kind of magic.
‘And I am a witch.’ This thought floated around in my head all the time. On the one hand I was excited about that, but on the other hand it scared me. I did not even know how to blieve it. There was a voice in my head that told me to be careful and to question everything I had heard; a voice that was mistrustful and considered it a joke. But how could that be a joke? My parents would not lie to me in such a bad and hurting way – well, then better to say a couple that adopted me into their family instead of parents. That just sounded horrible. How could they not be my parents? That was the moment when I wished I would not have asked for the truth. I did not want to know that but just live on like before. But that was impossible, it was too late. Now I had to deal with my life as a witch.
