Chapter I: A strange letter
Chapter 1
It was my 10th birthday when I found out that my whole life was just a lie. At 10 am I looked out of the window and saw a bird flying into my direction. I couldn't believe my eyes when it came closer and I recognized that it was an owl with a small letter in her beak. Because I owned the room on the attic and had a good view on the chimney from where I stood, I saw how the owl flew over our house and dropped the letter above the chimney. I left my room, ran down the stairs and into the living room where the small envelope landed in the fireplace. My parents were as confused as I was. Dad was the one who picked it up - I was too shocked to move. He came to me and gave me the letter with an astounded sight. I did not really know how to react. Should I open it? And if yes, should I do it here or upstairs in my bedroom when I’m alone? My mother might have noticed my tension because she stood up from the green couch to stroke my head.
Then she whispered, “Happy Birthday, Clary.”
I decided to better open the letter alone in my bedroom and therefore I said I would be back in a short time. Dad wanted to reply something, but Mom stopped him. I smiled at her to thank her and then went upstairs again.
The envelope looked kind of elegant and ancient. Now I was very curious and couldn’t wait any longer – so I opened it.

In that moment I really thought I was either dreaming or on my way to become crazy. I had to pinch myself to be sure... And it hurt - so I had to be crazy. When I was about 5 years old I really believed in witches and wizards and maybe I would have trusted that letter earlier. But now that I’m 10 years old, I do not believe in supernatural things. It must have been a joke, so I tried to ignore it.
