The Runes Of The Elder Futhark; An Introduction To Esoteric Associations And Their Application To The Art Of Divination

Chapter 5

It’s
been a few weeks since the initial chapters were published, as I needed to
spend time on my coursework, but in order to justify the money I am earning as
an intern, I realize I must continue with content. The following is entirely
unconnected to the previous, as I can only work with what I am given, as I get
it. I am working from two different notebooks, compiling information from each
and placing it in such a way that the reader can easily compare the differing
viewpoints and approaches taken. The first source text is one primarily
involved with the use of runes in divination, while the second has a more
esoteric bent. I’ll be setting the second material apart by preceding it with
an asterisk*.

Do remember
that this is the research not of myself, but of the scholar and historian De Azcarraga. It comes to me in the form of notes in her workbooks, for
projects she has put aside for now, with the direction to organize it as best I
can while changing as little as possible. There are places where things may be
less clear, and after publishing it in this format, it is entirely possible she
may allow me to go back in and do some editing for clarity and consistency.
Until then, do the best you can, and feel free to send me a message if you have
questions. One final note: While everything is entirely PG, references are made
to sexual energy, potency, desire, both male and female sexual organs, etc – in
a metaphoric or conceptual context. The Norse understood these to be a valid
and indeed crucial part of magical energies and how they worked.

The
Elder Futhark is just one version of the runic alphabet used by the ancient
Norse and other Scandinavian peoples for divination and magic. This work will
focus on the meanings and inter-relationships of the runes, primarily as they
have to do with Divination. Rune Magic is a topic best left for advanced level
students and another time. The Elder Futhark is composed of 24 runes, or
letters, and is sub-divided into three groups of eight (aettir). As many of the
runes are named after Gods and Goddesses in the Norse pantheon, a brief
glossary for those unfamiliar with these and other words is in the works for a
later time. Other unfamiliar terms I will address as they come up, and they too
will be included in the glossary.

The aettir of Freya (alternately of Fehu, as the
first rune in the group) is primarily related to practical and mundane matters.
These meanings are very simple and on the most basic level serve as the
background for a straight forward reading, in which questions of a practical
nature can be answered.

*The essential elements and abilities the Vitki
(rune-mage) must have developed within him/herself

The second aettir, that of Heimdall (or Hagalaz, the
first rune), principally corresponds to emotional matters and the psychological
conditions present within the individual.

*The runes writing forth the shape of the cosmos;
The runes of the Vitki’s initiation into higher levels of consciousness, rising
awareness and expanding consciousness.

The third aettir, that of Tyr (Alternately Tiwaz),
transcends the two others, in that it largely relates to relationships with
other people. Whereas the first aettir is largely concerned with the outer
world, and the second mainly deals with the inner world, the third aettir
synthesizes both the inner and outer world, and most of the runes in this group
contain a dual meaning involving both aspects.

*Runes of the Gods, and of the fully initiated Vitki
