Chapter 3
1. He was deaf. Around 1796, Beethoven started hearing some “buzzing sounds”. Then, in 1798, Beethoven became deaf.

2. He couldn’t multiply or divide. Since Beethoven left school early, he never learned how to multiply, or divide. Even on his dying day, Beethoven would be unable to do 12 ✕ 7, without counting out twelve seven times.

3. He died during a thunderstorm. He died during a thunderstorm, at the age of fifty-six. A friend of Beethoven compared Beethoven’s death to the composer’s symphonies with, “crashes that sound like hammering on the portals of Fate.”

4. His burial was monumental, as thousands of people came to his funeral. Beethoven's gravestone simply said, “BEETHOVEN”.

5. He hated giving piano lessons. He hated giving piano lessons to anyone who was less than brilliant at piano. He would, however, give piano lessons to attractive young women, no matter what their talent was.

6. He was always sick. He was constantly sick throughout his life, to his dying day. He suffered from deafness, colitis, rheumatism, rheumatic fever, typhus, abscesses, skin disorders, ophthalmia, a variety of different infections, jaundice, chronic hepatitis, inflammatory degeneration of the arteries, and cirrhosis of the liver.

7. He spaced-out a lot. He was always thought of as the person among his friends who would zone out. Once, when Cacilie (a family friend of Beethoven’s) noticed him spacing out whilst she was talking, she demanded a reply. Beethoven said, “I was just occupied with such a lovely, deep thought, I couldn’t bear to be disturbed.”
