Avifors

Chapter 5
Avifors, more often than not, is considered to be the premise for all things Transfiguration. The simplest of spells, it is used to transfigure statues, and by extension objects, into birds. The main issue with this spell that arises is based upon two things: Gamp's Law of Elemental Transfiguration and the laws determining Backfired Basics. By Gamp's Law of Elemental Transfiguration, "Magic may not be used to restore life, or by extension, give it". therefore, it is not entirely correct to call this spell 'life-giving'. The main reason for this is that although the statue does indeed come to life, it does not exude the normal characteristics of a bird that is purely a creation of nature. In other words, it has no free will or ability to think for itself. Rather, it is just a magical entity imbued in the statute enabling it to 'live', breathe and move around, but at the caster's accord. Additionally, it is known that if performed on regular objects, Avifors will adapt itself and take on some of the qualities of the original object.

- For Example, if you cast Avifors on a book, it would become a bird with the appearance of being made from paper. In addition to this, if the bird were to get wet, the magic would wash off instantly and revert back to normal.

Avifors, it is important to note, is entirely different from Avis. Avis is, put simply, an entity conjuration spell. It warps the atmosphere to generate spectral bird forms to fulfill the needs of a caster, be it to beautify a room or attack an opponent (See Oppugno). Avifors on the other hand, fills the body of a statue with this entity. Many people would state that Avis is more useful as it does not require an object, and in some cases this may be true. However this is not always the case. Avifors has double the strength of Avis primarily because it is secured inside a solid object, meaning that the magic is continuously in motion versus Avis, where the magic can freely flow out.

Avifors is possibly the most dangerous spell within transfiguration when backfiring since this causes its power to nearly triple. This much magical energy backfiring upon any single person is enough to smash through a building and, with the combined effects of the actual spell itself, can cause a powerful chemical reaction within the body, ultimately causing the caster to combust and enter a comatose state. Due to the anatomical effects of Avifors it could also lead to the caster being reverted turned into a stone edition of themselves. meaning that To revert them Avifors would be required, though this is incredibly unlikely to work.

It is therefore, most important to note the Wand Movement of Avifors is a simplistic twirl above the object, followed by a sharp tap with the incantation pronounced at any given point during the movement, but NOT before or after! Magical Historians have noted that this wand movement is significant as it locks the magic in place. The twirl creates a rift in the air which generates the magical energy, followed by the sharp tap which then forces the magic down and into the object where it is encased. The Incantation serves to turn the magic visible so that the caster might see where and how the magic is effecting the object. Furthermore, the incantation transforms the magic into the required field, since magic is simply just magic before the incantation turns it the way it needs to go. Examples of this can be seen in young wizards and witches who project magical energy without any knowledge of what they are doing. If an incantation was applied to this energy then the spells would be established in the fields they project.
