Lesson #6: GHOSTS AND HAGS

Chapter 6
.HAGS:
-sentient beings
-resemble humans in appearance, but they're ugly with pale skin and old looking
-they have four toes on each foot
-have more warts than the average witch
-have magical capabilities similar to trolls
-magic: rudimentary
-Muggles get their view of witches and wizards from hags
-can be found: Europe and Russia (occasionally: Diagon Alley, Knockturn Alley)
-some hugs prefer to live in a cave rather than in civilization
-diet: raw liver and children

.Known hags:

1.Annis Black:
-she lived in a cave in Deadmarsh England (late twentieth century)
-she was writing the Daily Prophet to complain about hags being portrayed as flesh-eating monsters

2.Babayaga:
-she lived in a hut in Russia that stood on chicken legs (medieval times)
-regulary ate children for breakfast (also for lunch and tea time)

3.Cordelia Misericordia:
-1298-1401
-represented the hags at the fourteenth century summit of the Wizards' Council

.GHOSTS:
-disembodies spirits of once living witches and wizards
-can only become a ghost if they were a witch or wizard while living
-the magical person is afraid of death and refuses to move on
OR
-they have a strong connection to the place they haunt
=that is what keeps them there
-unable to have any kind of physical influence
-can be seen: grey/silver apparition of who they were while living and are transparent
-ability: fly through solid objects (causes NO HARM to the ghost or the object)
-causes: disturbances (water, fire and air), drop the temperature of any immediate area they are in (flames may turn blue)
-celebrates their deathday (with a party)
-have rotten food set out for the party
-ability: taste rotten food when they fly through it
-one must NOT ask a ghost how they died (they are sensitive to these questions and will not answer)
-weightless, fail if you try to destroy one
-indestructable, but can petrified (reversed through Mandrake Restorative Draught)
-unalb eot move beyond the veil (they leave them trapped in the living world forever)
-it depends on the wizards' state of soul (ex: Tom Riddle's soul was so damaged and split so many times, he would be unable to become a ghost)

.FAMOUS GHOSTS:

1.Sir Nicholas De Mimsy-Porpington:
-nickname: Nearly Headless Nick
-house ghost: Gryffindor
-cause: he was „beheaded” (the axe was very dull and did not fully cut off his head)
-dislikes: being called Nearly Headless Nick
-description: friendly with the students and staff

2.The Fat Friar:
-houst ghost: Hufflepuff
-description: portly and jolly
-also knwon for: plead on behalf of Peeves and try to get him a second chance

3.The Bloody Baron:
-house ghost: Slytherin
-appearance: his face and his robes are stained with blood
-known as: the onlt person that has been known to be able to control Peeves
-description: unsocial, creepy, scary (the others)
-description: friendly (by SLytherins)

4.Helena Ravenclaw:
-house ghost: Ravenclaw
-daughter of Rowena Ravenclaw
-description: timid (by others), helpful and friendly (by Ravenclaws)

.SIDE NOTES:
.Ministry of Magic still holds some amount of control over the deceased.
.EX: When Moaning Myrtle was forced to return to her place of death and remain there, the Spirit Division in the DRCMC (Control of Magical Creatures) are the ones in charge of dealing with the welfare of ghosts.
