Lesson #5: GNOMES AND DOXIES

Chapter 5
.GNOMES:
-small creatures, size: one foot
-disproportionately large geads and no hair
-feet: hornlike, very hard
-brown/tan skin
-they resemble a potato
-can be found in Northern Europe and North America
-classification: XX (harmless)
-category: Beast
-little inteligence
-say things as „Geroff me”, often grunt, scream and mutter angrily
-known to scramble the surface and watch a de-gnoming happen

.Why do we need to de-gnome?:
-Gnomes like to burrow down in the ground
-favourite locations: in the gardens of witches and wizards
-if left alone, gnomes will overpopulate and soon take over the garden
-like to dig up and eat the roots of the plays and will destroy the entire garden

.How do we de-gnome?
-first method: Spin and Toss (temporary, lasts a few months)
-be sure to wear dragonhide gloves at all times

a)Catch a gnome
b)Grab it by its ankles and swing it around over your head a few times
c)Set it on the other side of the fence
d)The others will come up out of the holes to watch
e)Grab one of the onlookers and toss them one by one

-second method: Jarvey
-most wizards do not prefer to use this method
-results in a bloody mess

a)Get a jarvey (natural predator to gnomes)
b)Release it into a gnome hole
c)Let it do its business

.Are there any uses of gnomes?
-according to Xenophilius Lovegood, an infestation of gnomes can be seen as a blessing
-gnome saliva has unusual properties that can increase one's creativity
-people bitten often have the urge to sing Opera or give a speak in Mermish
-gnomes probably have magical capabilities

.What to do when bitten by a gnome?
-always wear dragonhide gloves!
-go insde and wash the bite with soap 3 minutes
-dry the wound and apply antibacterial potion to the area
-once the wound is clean, use a healing potion (Essence of Dittani)
-dress the wound with a bandage (make sure the bandage is the appropriate size)
-change the bandages and reapply the healing potion as needed until the wound is fully healed

.Signs of a gnome bite infection include:
1.Swelling at the site of the bite
2.Redness at the bite
3.Pus draining from the wound
4.Skin around the bite feeling feverish


.DOXIES:
-also known as „Bitting Fairy”
-found in Northen Europe and America
-they like cooler climates
-classification: XXX (competend wizards should cope)
-category: Beast
-are mistaken for fairies
-have small human like forms
-doxies are covered in thick black hair+has an extra pair of arms and legs
-two rows of razor sharp teeth
-wings: like a fairy, but curved, thick and they have shininess similar to a beetle's
-can lay up to 500 eggs (2-3 weeks before hatching)
-they are extremely venomous
-once you have an infestation, you should remove yourself from the home
-you can buy some Doxycide (foul smelling solution, black-coloured)
-wear dragonhide gloves!

.Mild Reactions to Doxy Venom:
-Redness around bite
-Some swelling around bite
-Slight dizziness
-Headache

.Allergice Reactions to Doxy Venom:
-Feeling faint
-Difficulty breathing
-Numbness/Tingling
-Swelling of face
-Loss of consciousness
-Sudden mood change
-Confusion
-Extreme swelling in nodes

.Uses:
-Fred and George Weasley use Doxy venom as an ingredient in their Skiving Snackboxes
