Lesson #4: IMPS AND BOWTRUCKLES

Chapter 4
.Some creatures are not harmful at all, while others can kill you.
.Example:
-Flobberworms (harmless)
-Basilisk (deadly)

.Department for Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures:
-witches and wizards who are in charge of everything to do with magical creatures
-work for the Ministry of Magic
-in charge of categorizing/classifying the creatures in the wizarding world

.Categories:
-Beast
-Being
-Spirit

a)BEAST:
-given in 1811 by Grogan Stump
-Beast Division was added to the DRCMC (Department for Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures)
-lacks sufficient intelligence to understand/follow the laws set by the Ministry of Magic
-lack proper knowledge to help shape the laws/be able to be held accountable for them
-example: IMP

b)BEING:
-in 1811, Grogan Stump brought in the Being Division
-any creature that has sufficient amount of intelligence
-can understand, follow and help shape the laws within the wizarding community
-example: Mermaids, Vampires, Ghosts (refuses to be called like this because they are in the same categories as Vampires)
-ghosts were banned from Burdock Muldoon's original definition of a being
-they were later revised by Elfrida Clagg and they were put in that categorization
-1811, Gorgan Stump added the Spirit Division for DRCMC

X-Boring
XX-Harmless
XXX-Competend wizards should cope
XXXX-Dangerous/Requires specialist knowledge
XXXXX-Known wizard killer

.IMPS:
-can be find in Britain and Ireland
-category: Beast
-classification: XX (harmless)
-similar to Pixies in size (around six-eight inches in height)
-they cannot fly
-features resemble a humanoid (bald, their skin is dark brown-black)
-diet: mainly insects
-strive in marshlands where they have their houses
-breeding habits are similar to Pixies (the difference: an Imp will be fully formed and about one inch in height when it hatches)
-not intelligent creatures
-limited knowledge
-have clever uses
-known tricksters (tricks mostly end harmlessy)
-they love to causes people to trip and fall over/steal from them/confuse them
-some of the tricks killed victims before (tripped/fallen into deep waters and drowned or fallen and broken their necks when dealing with Imps)
-have magical capabilities (powers are limited)
-ability: apparate/cause their target to see things
-can be associated with being a familiar
-if you can catch and win them over, they'll follow you
-they won't choose just anyone
-you need to be someone who enjoys tricking people/being mischievous to succed
-always travel with a group through the marshlands
-Imps doesn' attack if there's a group/prefer people who are alone
-if you are alone, keep your wand on hand
-distracting: Verdimillious/Knockback Jinx
-sneaky and hide easily/fast

.BOWTRUCKLES:
-category: Beast
-classification: XX (harmless)
-can be found in western England/southern Germany/certain forests in Scandinavia
-extremely hard to find
-size: vary/don't grow no larger than eight inches in height
-have brown eyes/skin resembles tree bark
-flat-faced stickmen make of bark and twigs
-long sharp fingers used as defense
-main defense: appearance
-natural havitat: tree
-also known as Tree Guardians (protect the trees in which they live)
-usually a peaceful creature
-if you attack the tree they will start scratching at the person with their long claws
-if being attack, cover your face
-usually aims for the eyes
-distraction: woodlice/fairy eggs (Bowtruckles' main food source)
-they have NO magic on their own, despite being attracted to the magical wood of the trees
