A wonderful surprise!

Chapter 10
The sea breeze blows all over the meadows and into our orchard. It’s the end of June, a week since I had the attack. The wind is heavenly, trying to ruffle down my hair while bringing the scent of the tree blossoms all the way here.

I can see all the trees from up here in my windowsill, and I'm trying to paint them into my canvas. I'm doing pretty well so far, perfecting the foliage, but not quite getting the hang of the grass. It ticks me how to do the lighter, warmer colors rather than the dark lush green ones. You see, I don't really have anything to do, so I figured that it would be nice to spend my time on painting, and I must say I am quite enjoying it. That is, until mom called.

"Alexa! Alexa darling, can you come down here for a second?"

"Yes, mother." I said with a sigh.

You know I'm just one of those types to hate being disrupted when I'm doing something I really like, especially when I'm painting. Do you know how hard it is to paint? You have to mix a big batch of it to get the exact shade you want, and if you leave it for just how many seconds, the paint dries up and then you'll have to mix another batch again and then the shade will NEVER be the same. But down I went to my mother, just like a good girl ought to. At least, I thought, it must be good. Mother won't disrupt me for something that isn't worth it, would she?

"Yes, mother? You wanted me?"I said as I turned round the kitchen corner.

She was baking cookies and muffins, the smell of which reached the whole house except for my bedroom.

"Thanks, mother" I said as I tried to reach for some cookies and muffins. "Oww!" She slapped my hand away, before taking a small plate and gave it to me. She then smirked (Note that she smirked,) not smiled at me.

"You couldn't possibly think that was the only reason I called you down, could you?"

I stared at her, speechless. I'm already busy munching on my muffin and I really thought this was the reason she called me, so what answer could I make her? Thankfully I wasn't expected to give an answer because she pulled out a small envelope from the drawer and handed it to me.

I read the address. It was a very pretty letter. It looks as if it was made of a high quality paper, the writing was in gold ink and the seal was scented too. It read "Andruida Rosier-Prince, Springfield."

"But it's for you, mother." I protested. I was taught never to open other's letters so I thought that she must have given it to me by accident and decided to tell so, but it turns out she really did want me to read it out loud. I looked at her hesitatingly, I'm afraid to know what's in this letter.

"Don't be afraid dear. The address is in gold ink, it's bound to say something good. It's one of our forms of communication with the professor." she assured me, as if she knew the question that was floating in my mind.

I put the seal over a flame so that it would drop out cleanly, unfolded the letter and read it out loud! and boy was I happy about the results.

" My Dear Andruida,

I have received your letter last Wednesday and would like to inform you that I have thought over the matter thoroughly, and I have formed the resolution that I would give your girl a chance. It is the highest praise to Hogwarts for you to choose our school in spite of another school much more near and much more convenient to you, and it would be our gladness and joy to help this child grow up to be a skilled witch, and take control of her facilities and powers. However, there are some things which needs to be settled but I guess we can take care of them in my office. I'll be expecting you in Hogwarts tomorrow at exactly 10 am. Greetings and regards to your husband and daughter.

Sincerely yours,
Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore

"Oh, mother! Is it real? Is it really? Am I really going to Hogwarts? Please tell me it's all real. Oh please, mother, tell me I'm not dreaming!"

"No dear, you certainly are NOT dreaming. In fact, we're going to go see the headmaster tomorrow, aren't we?"

Oh! I was so happy I can't possibly restrain myself from jumping up and down in joy. I AM GOING TO HOGWARTS! FOR REAL!

I was bouncing up and down real hard on the sofa, my braided red hair now flowing down behind me in a tangle of messy curls. I was too happy to care, it took me a few seconds before realizing the figure who had just come in the door.
"Uncle Bartimius!" I was bouncing still when I came up to him and I couldn't quite stop if I wasn't going to hug him. He's my mother's brother, and he keeps constant visits with us during the summer. He's quite a tall man, if I may say though I'm not really good at measuring exactly how tall. He has a clean face, with blue eyes and brown hair, just like my mother.

"So, you finally know don't you?"

"Yes I do. I'm a witch, and I have magic, mom does too, and now I'm going to go to Hogwarts! I can imagine all of it now! I shall have a good time there, don't you think uncle?

" Of course, you will. Your mom and I graduated there and it was one of the best days of my life! I'm sure you will be just as good as your mother was."

"You have magic too, don't you? Show me!"

"I have one just for you actually." He snapped his fingers twice, and out of nowhere came a basket of chocolates floating in mid-air. Then he took his bag and pulled out a small fuzzy brown thing from the inside. It was wriggling and writhing, it's sharp teeth protruding out from it's book like structure.

"This is the monster book of monsters. It's a book, but it bites. Just rub the cover several times and make sure it's calmed down before unlatching it, and inside you'll see all about the different monsters in the wizarding world."

I did what I was told and the monster book did quiet down. I sat down on the couch, intent on reading it; I have to keep rubbing the cover as I read it though, because it keeps on wiggling and growling if I didn't do so.

"Very good. You're learning fast, Alexa. Do you like it?"

"Yes, I like it very much, and I guess I'm going to like a lot more things in the wizarding world from now on." I said with a smile.

My uncle just chuckled and ruffled my very messy hair, making it even more messy and tangled.

"Well in that case, welcome to our world little one."
