Chapter 2
Lesson Objectives(copied): · To show students the complex nature of caring for plants · For students to be able to engage in a discussion with fellow witches and wizards about the necessities of plant life · To give students an appreciation for the use of Herbology in Potions The basics of herbology means understanding the requirements and special qualities of each plant species. For example(obvious ones): -Morphanous Cacti can't grow will not grow next to the ocean -Aquaigus Root will not grow in a dry desert When having problems with plants ask "Why isn't my plant growing?" and be open minded Info on Repotting: -The plant will enjoy the freshness of its new pot. [I think it helps it grow] -If the pot is bigger than the previous pot [why would it not be.] the plant's confidence will be boosted -The plant's diet will change -Flesh-eating plants will double their intake -Gaviat Roots will eat a third of the servings of grass which it used to (two-thirds less than before) -The amount of sunlight needed will stay the same most likely -The amount of water needed will increase or decrease most of the time -Do not take the changes lightly [or your plant might die] Trees tend to have the longest lifespans, however, cacti and guapo herbs also have lengthy lives. Plants are individual and can understand pain so treat them with care. Info on Dreamless Sleep Potion: -Made out of Moonstone -Made out of Starpuffs -The things above are not all of the ingredients -Info on Moonstone: -Causes drowsiness -Made out of hatched dragon eggshells -Info on Starpuffs: -Is a plant that has hypnotic abilities -Can mesmerize you with their sparkling petals and shimmering leaves -Make the potion dreamless by giving them the inability to think Plants Moving (Copied): Habitats certainly bring about a lot of controversy on the field of Herbology. Many plants have left their native lands and adapted to new habitats (sometimes creating strains of a particular plant). This movement of plants can cause many disruptions to the life cycles of any given environment. Habitats acceptable for growth tend to revolve around what amount of sunlight and water plants in the region have access to, although the temperature of the climate is also a factor. Note: -Other than moonstone, the realm of sleep will be mostly be affected by plants - Mix an infusion of wormwood and some powdered root of asphodel, and you will produce a sleeping potion so powerful it is known as the Draught of Living Death. Other major plant ingredients (copied): · Mistletoe berries · Wolfsbane/monkshood/aconite · Valerian Sprigs (also in sleeping potions) · Leaping Toadstool · Knotgrass · Peppermint · Root of Aconite · Poppy Heads · Shrivelfigs (shrinking potions especially) · Rose Thorns · Rose Oil Some more copied stuff: There are several different common purposes for plants in potions. Sometimes plants are used to add scent to perfumes, and other times plants are added to a potion in order to add freshness or qualities of naturality to a beauty potion. In medicinal potions, plant ingredients are usually chosen based on their temperament, toxicity, and other properties of their identity. One other potion, relevant to this term’s work, is the Forgetfulness Potion. Two of the three main ingredients of the Forgetfulness Potion are plants: Mistletoe berries, as well as Valerian sprigs. Mistletoe berries cause hallucinations, which helps to distract the one who takes the potion, which helps allow the potion to take its effect of memory loss. Valerian sprigs have a sedative quality, which allows for the mind to be put to sleep, which also causes forgetfulness. Names of some plants that we will be studying talked about Noteworthy plant out of the list that she/he told us to learn Peppermint(Copied from wika): Peppermint is a mint plant. Severus Snape discovered that adding a sprig of it to the Elixir to Induce Euphoria counteracted the potion's side effects of unrestrained singing and nose-tweaking while he was still a student at Hogwarts in the 1970s. In 1997, Harry Potter had to make an Elixir for Potions, and so he followed the modified brewing instructions that Snape had written in his copy of Advanced Potion-Making as a teen. Professor Slughorn thought the addition of peppermint to the recipe was "unorthodox" but a "stroke of inspiration." It is also commonly used in both the Wizard and Muggle world to flavour sweets and concoctions. It is a known flavour of Bertie Bott's Every Flavour Beans.
