Chapter 11
“Annie!” shouted Mom from the bottom of the stairs, “Time for breakfast!”
I turned over in my bed, swung my legs over the other side, and got dressed in the outfit Mom had picked out for me. I walked down the hall and down the stairs.
“Hey Mimi,” I said as we turned into the kitchen, “Hey Mom. Hey Irwin!”
Mimi waved from the stove, where she was making blueberry pancakes and what she calls Mimi sausages.(Instead of mini.) I sat down in front of my mom and Irwin sat next to me.
“Morning, Annie. Morning, Irwin,” Mimi smiled at me as she loaded my plate with still sizzling sausages and a nice puffy pancake. I gave her my best smile I could manage without yawning. Irwin laughed.
“I haven’t cooked pancakes since I moved out of my house when I was sixteen!” exclaimed Mimi, tilting a pancake onto Irwin’s plate. I grinned to myself and speared a piece of sausage with my fork.
Things have been different now with Irwin and Mimi living with us but I really like having them here. Mimi’s like my second mom and Irwin like a second brother and a well….ya know, more than a BFF.
Peter came down the stairs a few minutes later and asked me accusingly if I knew where his favorite packing bag was. Good old Peter. Always accusing me. I said I didn’t but then remembered I’d left it at the treehouse. So I told him Irwin and I would get it later.
After I finished my pancake and Mimi sausages, Irwin and I went upstairs and started working on the miniature town Irwin had started on when he got here. He had showed me how to make the little figurines so I was a pro at this now. As I painted brown hair onto Mom’s mini figure head, Irwin’s hand self consciously brushed against mine and my heart gave a little flutter of happiness.
“Annie?” said Irwin turning to me.
“Yeah?”
“Thanks for letting us live next to you,” he pulled at an invisible string on his pants, “I didn't really like living with my family. They weren't that nice.”
“Really?” I said, surprised, “Can you tell me about them?”
“Sure,” He cleared his throat and began, “My mom and dad’s names were Cornulus and Macy Johnson. I had two sisters. One was two years older than me. Her name was Millicent. The other was named Julia and she didn't want to be part of CODE so she ran away.”
“So….so….” Something clicked on in my head and I gasped, “Milly’s your sister! But that's impossible!”
“You know her?” Irwin looked surprised.
“She used to be my friend,” I said sadly looked at the mini town, “But she tried to kill me, my family, and….” I stopped suddenly.
“Yes?” said Irwin, leaning in.
“She tried to kill you,” I whispered quietly.
Irwin leaned over and gave me a squeeze. I blushed graciously.
“I'm glad I'm living with you, Annie,” he said happily, “‘Cause there's no place I'd rather be than here with you.”
