Not Quite a Hamilton

written by Cole Llewelyn

In the streets of Albany in 1800, young, scrappy and hungry, an 18 year old girl's life is made worth living by one family, but when the family begins to fall apart, her fragile life could fall to pieces. I will be adding chapters as I write them. (All character descriptions taken from the musical Hamilton, not 100% historically accurate)

Drifting...

Chapter 7
I woke up in a strange, white, room, lying on a stiff mattress, a thin blanket covering me. All I could see was a white ceiling, and I tried to sit up to get a better view of the room, but a ringing noise filled my ears, and I felt a searing pain in my head. I shouted out involuntarily, and I heard footsteps by the room I was in. The door opened, and I saw a woman come in. She was wearing a pink dress, and her black curly hair was pulled back into a ponytail.

“You’re finally awake! I thought you would never wake up; you were out cold when we found you in the street. I don’t know why you were outside in the snow, you could have frozen to death!” the lady said, everything spilling out all at once. My head hurt, and I squeezed my eyes shut. I thought I recognized the woman, and I racked my brain for a few seconds, until I remembered.

“Angelica?” I said, my voice hoarse. I tried to sit up again, and this time, I could, without too bad of a headache.

“Shh, don’t talk,” she said, putting the back of her hand on my forehead. “Your fever’s broken finally,” she told me, then walked out of the door, leaving me sitting up in the strange bedroom, which I now recognized as a guest room in the Hamilton house. I looked over at a mirror in the corner of the room, and saw my face, which was white as a sheet, the freckles on my nose standing out more than ever. I looked terrible, huge bags underneath my eyes. The door creaked open again, and Philip walked in.

“Don’t you ever do that again, you scared me half to death!” he said, walking over to the bed. I laughed, as Philip pulled me into a hug.

“I was actually halfway to death,” I laughed, only half joking. “How long have I been unconscious?” I asked, my head still hurting. Philip looked away,

“Five days,” he told me, and I panicked slightly. I had missed so much work, so much money. I would have to go hungry for another… I did the math in my head quickly. 7 days, another week without food. Outside the room, I heard Angelica shouting,

“You have invented a new kind of stupid. This is a damage that you can never undo!” Philip stood up,

“They haven’t stopped arguing for days, it’s been driving Eliza and I insane,” he told me, running a hand through his curly brown hair. I bit my lip,

“H-How is your dad?” I asked cautiously, I knew it was a touchy subject. Philip opened his mouth, but was interrupted by Angelica again.

“You’re such an imbecile! Why did you even…” she trailed off as Eliza came up the stairs. Philip’s hands were clenched into fists.

“You okay?” I asked, noticing the annoyed expression on his face.

“Yeah, I just… I know that my dad’s been awful, but…” Philip looked up at me, “I still look up to him, you know? I can’t stand anyone dishonoring him. He’s still my dad after all,” He said, unclenching his fists. I nodded, I knew what it was like to look up to your dad.

“I’m sure he’s proud of you,” I said, and Philip smiled sadly,

“Yeah,” He said, then looked up. “Do you want to try, you know, standing up?” I nodded, then took Philip’s outstretched hand. I pulled back the covers, swung my legs over the side of the bed, and put my feet on the floor, trying to push myself up. I stood up, shaking slightly, and the room swan in front of my eyes, and I fell backwards. Philip grabbed my shoulder and pulled me back up, the room stayed still this time, but I still felt shaky on my feet, and I could tell that I was weak.
