A hard life

written by Fred Black

'It's okay Sal' said my dad Liam trying to comfort my mum. 'Ahhhhhhh!' She screamed. 'It's okay.' Dad said again. They were in the hospital in 1999 waiting for me to be born. 'She's out!' Said the doctor, sweat dripping down her forehead. The doctors were cheering then my dad looked at my mum. 'You did it!' He said smiling, but something was wrong, mum wasn't breathing. 'Sal! Sally! SALLY!' The cheering stopped and all you could hear was dad's sobs and the doctors, trying but failing to comfort him. 'Where's the exit?' Asked dad calming down. 'That way!' One of the doctors said pointing behind her. 'Thanks!' Dad said with his false smile. 'Do you want your baby?' The doctor said but, dad had already left the room.

Chapter One: Who am I?

Chapter 1
'Francesca time for school!' Shouted Aunt Sydney from at the bottom of the stairs. This is me after all those years of not knowing who I am and how I am I finally, I think I know. In case you didn't know I'm Francesca Potter and that was my foster mum Sydney. I'm 17 and in Year 11 at Bellymoore College. I never knew my parents but it has been what I have been longing for, for as long as I could talk to learn about them. 'Francesca hurry UP!' Shouted aunt Sydney, impatiently. I call her aunt because that's what she wants me to call her but I don't want to call her aunt. 'Yes Aunt Sydney!' I quickly got dressed, gathered my stuff for school, stuffed it in my bag, headed down stairs and grabbed an apple.

There was a knock at the door and Aunt Sydney answered it. 'It's Fred, Francesca!' 'Coming!' I shouted through a mouthful of apple. Fred was my boyfriend. I had known him forever and he was one of people who had been with me all through all the trouble in my family and was one of the only people I trusted. He had always been there for me even when I was obsessed with Harry Potter and finding my family. He always aided me and without his help I would be going on this amazing trip to Europe to find out who I am and who my family are. But we can talk more about that later. I walked to the door. 'Hey Fred!' I said flinging my arms around him. 'Hey Cesca!' He said kissing kissing me on the cheek. Aunt Sydney coughed and brought me back to earth. ‘Are you gonna walk home today?’ She said ignoring Fred. ‘Yep’ I said absentmindedly. ‘Bye Francesca!’ She said slamming the door in our faces. ‘I can't wait until next year!’ I said excitedly. ‘We will leave this and find out who I truly am!’ ‘Yes me too!’ Fred said with false excitement. ‘What's wrong?’ I said sensing he wasn't being honest. ‘I just don't want you to get too excited and then it doesn't work out.’ He said truthfully. ‘I understand Fred’ I said walking into school. ‘But you could at least be happy!’ I smiled. ‘How are you so optimistic?’ Fred said smiling along with me. ‘Look can I talk to you later?’ He said looking at the captain of our cricket team. ‘What do you need to talk to Luke about?’ I asked. ‘Just the lineup up for Saturday! Cause I might be late then!’ He said. ‘Of course Love you!’ I said as he walked away. ‘Love you too!’ He shouted.

‘Hello lovebird!’ Called my best friend Haley as she walked through the gates.’Hey Hay!' I said chuckling like I usually do when I say that. 'What have I told you.' She said smiling. 'Don't call me that!' She said looking at my smile. 'Okay Hay!' I said. The bell went. 'Oh!' I said 'I have Tolling now! English.' 'Well' said Haley. 'I have Mill, Maths. Yay!' She said sarcastically. 'Well' I said as the second bell went, 'I have to go!' I said at the same time as Hayley! 'Bye!' I ran off. I walked into class and took my usual seat at the back. 'Hey!' Said a familiar voice behind me. 'Hey Tom!' I replied kindly. Tom is my guy best friend and is in all my classes. 'So how many pranks have you done since last English?' He asked sniggering. 'Maybe 3 or 4 on my parents and 1 on you!' I said as he sat down on his seat and set the whoopie cushion off. 'Lol Tom, I always get you so easily!' I said laughing. 'Ha ha Fran, I'll get you back.' He said smiling. 'You always say that but never do!' I said as the door opened and Mr. Tolling walked in. He took his seat at his desk and got the class ready. He then picked up a red whiteboard marker and wrote 3 words on the whiteboard: Who am I? I whispered to Tom 'I'm gonna rock this class!' I said sarcastically. 'You are!' He said going along with it then he said seriously, 'come on Fran don't think like that!' 'Settle down class!' Mr. Tolling said, and all the talking ceased. 'Today' he continued. 'We are going to discuss the topic; Who am I?' I put my hand up, thinking how could I do this? 'Wait Miss Potter.' He said fighting back my next retort. He continued, 'you keep getting lost throughout high school because of all the stuff that is going on, and this class is meant to bring you back to yourself!'

The hour of me just sitting there trying to think of who I am slowly passed and the bell for recess rang. 'Okay Everyone!' Mr. Tolling said while everyone was packing up their stuff. 'The essay needs to be 3 pages long and be back to me next Monday! Class dismissed!' There was bustle of movement throughout the classroom as everyone left except me. 'Excuse me Mr. Tolling?' I asked timidly. 'Yes Miss Potter?' He said as he was packing up his stuff. I decided not to make chit chat and just get to the point. 'I'm not sure how I am going to complete your essay because...' I took a deep breath. 'I am not sure who I am.' Mr.Tolling stayed quiet for quite a while packing up his stuff, then after what seemed like months he answered, 'you don't have to know who your family are to know who YOU are' he said wisely. 'Now off to recess!' He said hurrying me out of the classroom. One thing was sure I did not agree with him, I did need to know my family to know who I was.
