>>>>>>> ARTHUR G. BIRT
<<<<<<<
Born: 1803 in Westward Ho!, Devon, England
Cannon Player 1826-1839
303 Appearances
Captain 1838-1839
43 International Caps
4 League Titles
Birt was a relatively late bloomer when he played his first
professional match aged 23. He made up for this by becoming an instant legend
as the Cannons side of 1826-‘27 conceded half the goals of the team the
previous season. England call-ups followed and the club which had not won the
League in nearly 30 years won the title in 1829. Birt continued to excel, his
reach and agility key to his success and he won 3 more titles in his later
career. If it wasn’t for the everlasting Edgar Grace, Birt surely would have
captained the Cannons much longer than lone the season he did before his
retirement.
>>>>>>> GEORGE DAVIDSON
<<<<<<<
Born: 1977 in Bristol, England
Cannon Player 2000-2012
203 Appearances
Captain 2008-2012
2 International Caps
Davidson is only just retired but he is already tipped as a
future coach of the Cannons. Whilst he never managed to achieve the success of
the greats of the past, had he not played for the Cannons Davidson would
probably have played many more times for his country. His win record was, understandably,
pretty poor but his shot-to-save ratio was as good as any Keeper in the League
in recent times. In his 4 seasons as captain, Davidson only achieved a handful
of wins but his never-say-die attitude and high levels of effort will ensure he
will be mentioned in the same conversation as some of Chudley’s greats, even if
not the same sentence.
>>>>>>> CHARLIE WATKINS
<<<<<<<
Born: 1860 in Chudley, Devon, England
Cannon Player 1880-1896
345 Appearances
Captain 1887-1896
62 International Caps
3 League Titles
Watkins was recently voted the Cannons’ fourth
greatest player of all time and it is hardly surprising given his statistics. Watkins
played for just one club in his career and won 3 League titles with it,
including 2 as captain. The record for fewest goals conceded in a League season
stood for over 100 years before Watkins smashed it not once but twice in his
career, one that still stands to this day. His athleticism was unrivalled and
this earned him the respect of opponents worldwide, especially when he went on
to captain his country on his way to 62 caps.
