>>>>>>> SARAH N. EASTER
<<<<<<<
Born: 1729 in Appleby, Cumbria, England
Cannon Players 1753-1761
151 Appearances
17 International Caps
4 League Titles
Easter, along with Sian love, was one of the Cannons’ first
signing when she joined from the Appleby Arrows in time to make the line-up for
the club’s League debut. It was rumoured that the two of them were paid more
than the rest of the squad put together when they joined but Cannons fans didn’t
seem bothered. As well as winning 4 League titles she topped the Leagues
scoring chart 3 years in a row. Sharing a name with a famous festival, Easter
hosted an egg hunt over Dartmoor every year she was at the club, donating close
to 10,000 chocolate eggs to local children in her 8 years in Devon.
>>>>>>> LORENZO GOZZOLI
<<<<<<<
Born: 1860 in San Gimignano, Italy
Cannon Player 1883-1892
179 Appearances
87 International Caps
3 League Titles
Gozzoli was one of the most successful foreign imports in
history of the League by the time he left the club in 1892. Having joined for a
reported record fee his eccentricity endeared him to the fans and his talent
helped his team to 3 League titles. His talent made him a target, and he missed
a number of games through injury including the entire 1886-87 season. He was
also included in the Italian National team 87 times and holds his nation’s
record for most Snitch catches with 68.
>>>>>>> EDGAR W. GRACE
<<<<<<<
Born: 1783 in Chudley, Devon, England
Cannon Player 1800-1837
678 Appearances
Captain 1808-1837
103 International Caps
5 Leagues Titles
Team Coach 1827-1852
The great-grandson of club founder Elmer, Edgar is widely
heralded as the greatest player in the Chudley Cannons’ history and
unsurprisingly so. Having won a Cannons’ record 5 League titles as a player he
followed it up a further 2 as team coach. Grace played more than 250 matches
more than any other Cannon and was handed the captaincy at the age of 25, a
post he held for 29 more years. His legendary status applies much further
afield than Devon however, as Edgar is one of only a handful of players to
achieve 100 international caps. At a time when Cannons players were filling up
the National teams of Great Britain, Grace captained England to World Cup
victory, earning him a place in the Quidditch Hall of Fame.
>>>>>>> FRANK A. HARLOW
<<<<<<<
Born: 1816 in Ottery St. Catchpole, Devon, England
Cannon Player 1835-1847
253 Appearances
Captain 1843-1847
47 International Caps
4 League Titles
Harlow was another of the club’s local talents and the protégée
of Edgar Grace. Winning 2 titles in his first 3 years he earned the Young
Player of the Year award in each of them. Harlow was also a national treasure,
earning 47 caps for England during his career. He was a much loved member of
the team and Quidditch community and was a popular winner when he topped the
scoring charts in 5 seasons during his career. He had talent in abundance and
linked up with his Chasing partners so cohesively many believed the Cannons
teams of the 1830s and ‘40s practised legilimency as well as broomwork in
training.
>>>>>>> MARIA KARCEMARSKAS
<<<<<<<
Born: 1777 in Vilnius, Lithuania
Cannon Player 1797-1807
207 Appearances
Captain 1806-1807
17 International Caps
2 League Titles
Karcemarskas was a record breaker for the Cannons by
becoming not only their first non-British captain but also the first female to
hold the post. A skilful Chaser, Karcemarskas was overlooked by her National
team for the majority of her career, much to the dismay of her countrymen and
women. 2 League titles in her early years were the peak in her Cannon career
but it wasn’t until after a successful move to Japan that Karcemarskas finally
earned the first of her 17 caps for Lithuania.
>>>>>>> SIAN P. LOVE <<<<<<<
Born: 1726 in Appleby, Cumbria, England
Cannon Player 1753-1758
106 Appearances
4 International Caps
3 League Titles
Love joined the club alongside Easter during her prime but
never reached the same heights and was generally played in a supporting role to
her Chasing colleagues. Love stayed for only five years but managed 3 League
titles giving her the record for highest proportion of games won by a Cannon.
She left to rejoin her hometown team where she played out her career, captaining
the Arrows to a couple of League titles.
>>>>>>> HENRIETTA R. SPENCER
<<<<<<<
Born: 1838 in London, England
Cannon Player 1859-1871
227 Appearances
Captain 1866-1871
1 League Title
Spencer captained the club to a solitary League title at a
time the club was generally struggling to hit the heights of previous Cannons
sides. Seen by teammates as somewhat bossy Spencer was feared by opponents for
her physicality as she played an enforcer role to allow her Chasing partners to
attack at will. Her style of play, whilst disciplined, was never appreciated by
England coaches and therefore Spencer was always overlooked for the National
Team but she was loved by Cannons fans nonetheless.
>>>>>>> BARON GILBERT SWARTHY
<<<<<<<
Born: 1723 in Exeter, Devon, England
Cannon Player 1753-1771
400 Appearances
Captain 1753-1771
53 International Caps
5 League Titles
Team Coach 1772-1786
Baron Swarthy was chosen by Elmer Grace to be
the Cannons’ first captain, an honour he held for his whole playing career for
the club. Swarthy was, at aged 30, was relatively old when the club was formed
in 1753 but this didn’t stop the Baron playing on for a further 18 years and
reaching 400 appearances (the second most of any Cannon). He had already been
awarded a number of international caps before he joined from the Heidelberg
Harriers after a short spell in Germany but his greatest achievements came in Chudley
orange. 5 League titles as a player and 4 as team coach makes him the most successful
Cannon in terms of trophies won, and he continued to play the sport for
recreation when he opted for a political career in 1786.
