Dexter was famed for his accuracy with the bat and for his
high work rate. As a local lad he grew up supporting the club in its formative
years and their early successes inspired him to reach the highest levels of the
game. A Cannons player for the entirety of his playing career, he won 4 League
titles during one of the club’s most successful periods and achieved 14
call-ups to the National side. His international experience and leadership by
example earned him 6 years of captaincy in the latter part of his career and
included 2 of his titles.

“The Dude” was the first Russian to play in Britain for
nearly 100 years when he joined the Cannons from his hometown club. He was known
as the suicidal Beater for his techniques in blocking Bludgers and defending
his teammates with his body and it was this quality which has seen him become
somewhat of a cult hero amongst Cannons fans and saw him capped 54 times by his
nation despite not being the most technical of players. His playing style did
break one record however; Dudurov holds the record for highest proportion of games
not finished, having failed to play to the end of 46% of his matches because of
injury.

Fender holds the record for joint most successful Cannon in
terms of League titles won with 5. A local man, Fender was not only a hero
amongst Cannons fans but also fans across the country. He was a gentle giant
off and on the pitch which endeared him to the fans but his power and poise was
what earned him his 34 international caps. Such was his impact on the team that
when he retired, the club went for a 20 year title drought.

Gunn was famed for his bald head as much as his skill but it
was his strength and aggression which won him applause. Much to the dismay of
local rivals the Falmouth Falcons, famed for their aggressive Beater style,
Gunn chose the “it” team of the time and acted as an alternative to the style of
player the club already had playing. His contrasting technique added another
dimension to the side and in his 12 years he won 4 League titles.

North was the first and last Canadian to play for the
Cannons. He joined in the peak of his career and stayed long enough to win a
solitary League title under the management of Florence Jacqueline. A fairly
talented Beater, North was more popular for his appearance, being voted the
most attractive player in the country in each of his 5 years this side of the
Atlantic. His 6 international caps were all played in matches in Europe,
fuelling speculation that he was only picked due to overseas popularity and the
fact that he was able to host the team when they travelled over to save money.

Squire was one of the Cannons’ early, young, local talents
who was the less successful Beating partner to Robin Dexter. He still achieved
2 League titles and stayed with the club for 10 years before moving on have an
even more successful playing career in the USA. Jasper was a favourite amongst
fans not only for his performances but also for his personality. He was
recently voted the nicest player in the club’s history by fans.

Stoffard was another Northerner who travelled the length of
the country to play for the club. In his decade as a Cannon he won 3 League
titles including the club’s last in ’92 and this earned him 3 call-ups to the
England team. Stoffard also holds the record for the strongest Bludger hit in
League history, but sadly it was misjudged and knocked out the teeth of a young
boy in the crowd. Stoffard subsequently donated his broomstick to the boy, who
chopped it up to use as a set of dentures.
