Simply Sneakers

My mom always said I was strange, I thought she was right. So when things started to go wrong - and I mean REALLY wrong, my mom blamed me. Life had been hard enough after my dad had died, but I'm now eleven and my mom completely forgot about me. Then I got a letter. A real letter, a letter I'd never seen before, a letter I knew my mum thought was probably from an advertisement company. When I opened it, it was for me! It was a letter to Hogwarts. And trust me, no one has ever had as much fun as I did. Besides my ugly sneakers.

Sneakers, Sneakers

Chapter 1
"Wanda! Get yourself over here and explain why the teacups are all gone and why there are kittens running around?" yelled my mom.
Ah, the first words telling me I was a witch. Well, not really. I was about seven at the time.
"I don't know, Mum. You tell me." I told her after picking up one of the cats and snuggling it.
My mom's brown eyes inflated like a match to a candle, but I just stood her with a questioning look. Her hair then changed purple with red stripes. I laughed, she ran into the bathroom and looked into the mirror. I got off scot-clean, like usual. It's now two years later. Too bad Mum doesn't know what she's missing.
"Wanda, clean this house." Mum yelled at me.
"But there's no reason to." I replied, crossing my arms.
"Oh, no reason? No reason? My boyfriend is coming over and this house has to be mark free." I knew in her mind she was secretly wishing I had never been born. I sometimes wished it too.
"Okay. So what about Dad?" I asked her, knowing this pushed her buttons.
"Dad's dead. Now get to work." she barked at me, going into the bathroom to put on an extra layer of make-up and fix her brown hair.
I grabbed the broom, laughing in my head at the moment I had had when I was seven. If only I was seven right now! And I always wondered why her hair turned purple with red stripes. That was funny alright. I heard a knock on the door, so I figured it was Mum's boyfriend. My mum ran out and opened the door. She looked around and saw nothing. So she shut the door.
"Wanda, also get some soup started!" she screeched at me.
My mum's a hag. A one hundred percent hag. "Alright, Mum..."
I got all the ingredients out and started to put it in, when I heard another knock at the door.
"I'll get it!" I called to Mum.
"Nope. I'm getting it. Right now you're just a live-in maid, got it?" she told me, fluffing up her hair before going to the door. Again, nothing there. I laughed to myself, then went back to stirring the soup. My mum was now really angry, she muttered something about some stupid pranks. This time she went upstairs, probably to change. I heard a knock on the door, so I ran up to the door and opened it. Our house was somewhat small and unknown, so I wasn't expecting a letter. Or the letter. I looked down and saw a letter. I picked it up. It had a wax thing on it, and a drawing of an eagle, a badger, a snake and a lion. It seemed almost familiar, but my brain was more confused why there was a letter. Then I saw my name, written in red ink.
Wanda Adams, it had said.
I opened it, wondering what could possibly be inside, when my mum grabbed me and pulled me inside.
"What do you think you're doing?" hissed my mum.
"I... I got a letter." I replied, wondering why on earth she would ask.
"My boyfriend will be here at any moment, now go up to your room. I'll tend to the soup." she shook my arm violently and sent me down the hall.
I rubbed my arm, wondering how she possibly could ever think of hurting her own kin. I didn't care as much as I used to, though. I opened the letter, crossing my fingers that it was real. I felt like all of the sneakers in my room were watching me. Silently judging me. My mum's sneakers, my old sneakers, my current sneakers. My socks felt warmer on my feet as I opened the letter. I almost screamed when I opened it.

Dear Ms. Adams,
We are pleased to inform you that you have been accepted into Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Please find enclosed a list of all necessary books and equipment. Term begins on September 1st. We await your confirmation owl by July 31st.

Yours sincerely,

Minerva McGonnacal, Headmistress.

I smiled, now knowing I was a witch. I couldn't tell my mum - I just couldn't! She'd want me gone anyways, but this is my secret. I'll tell her I'll stay with a friend. No, that won't work. That I'm going on a tour for sneakers! That'll work. I know it will. I pulled on my sneakers, grabbed the letter. I was only wearing a dirty blouse and some jeans, but I jumped out the window anyways. I did find the enclosed list, and I knew where I was going. At least I thought I was.
