“How do you know?” Chase asked urgently. “When I was in the hole, I had a strange memory.” Lily said. “I was playing with a little boy, and I heard him scream. And I ran inside the house to find him, but he was gone. Then I saw my mother on the floor, and a strange woman cackling above her. Chase, the woman was Mrs. Tart. Then a gloved hand slapped over my mouth. I was taken away. Our stories sound very similar. Maybe your parents and mine both died from the attacks.” Suggested Lily.
Chase swallowed down a lump of deep foreboding. Lily ran up ahead of him. Chase, still carrying the book, followed. “When you fell into the pit did you see anything about the riddle?” Questioned Chase. “No. But I did see two strange books.” Lily replied.
Chase thought it over carefully. He had not thought about what the riddle had meant, because he was rescuing Lily. The ghost had said: To get to thee you must unite three. What did that mean, he had no idea. There must be 3 objects that had to be united to make something bigger and better. It could be a vortex, or a portal, but what three objects make a portal?
“Come on Chase! What are you doing?” Lily asked. Chase looked up and saw that Lily was 20 feet ahead of him. Sighing he picked up the pace just a little.
“ Lily, have you been thinking at all about the riddle? Have you thought about what we have to unite?” Chase asked. Lily stopped.
“Do you little fellas happen to know Mrs. Tart?” Asked a wrinkled old man. Chase gulped. “With all due respect, sir, why do you ask?” Lily asked. “I’m sure you already figured it out for yourselves.” He winked.
Chase and Lily looked at each other. “What do you mean sir?” Chase asked politely. “You know. Now, You guys both are very busy I believe. Having to go get both books.” The man said. “What are you talking about?” Lily asked. “I have said too much. Now, if you don’t mind I need to go.” With that the man disappeared down the road.
“Lily, what do you think he meant when he said that we need to get both books?” asked Chase. “Do you think it has something to do with the riddle?” “Yes I believe so.” Lily replied. “We need to go to the library.” Chase said quickly.
Chase held the book up to the locked door. All of a sudden, a burst of light came from the book. The wind started to blow rapidly. Chase’s hair was whipped over his eyes. Then, everything was suddenly still, and calm. There was two identical clicks, and then the door magically eased open, with no person behind it.
Chase lead Lily over to the picture of the cat. “Look at that.” Case said holding up the book to the picture.
