Chase, who had been looking at a bad banana, suddenly looked up and got to his feet. “Wha-what do you mean?” Lily was already running out of the alleyway. “Come on! Follow me!” She whispered. Chase groaned again. It had turned midnight already. Considering his choices, he followed Lily. She led him past the post office, past the school, past the fish market, and then they finally got to the library. They stopped, huffing in front of the library steps. Lily tried the door. Locked.
“Darn it! Now we’ll never get in.” Lily said, disappointed. “ Who says we won’t?” Chase said smiling mischievously. “Come on!” He started to run again with Lily right behind him. They ran through people’s yards, junk yards, dumps, until they finally reached the top of a hill. Panting they looked down. At the bottom of the hill was… “ Was this-was this your… house?” Lily asked. Chase nodded. The house was a large pile of shrapnel, bricks, smoke, and large pieces of wood. “ Um, what are we doing again?” Lily asked. “ You’ll see.” He started down the hill toward the ruins.
Chase picked his way through the splinters of wood and other things. Finally, he reached a small clearing. The clearing was sprinkled in grass. In the middle there was a large black hole filled with charcoal and blood. Laying it the hole, was a book. Chase smiled. Careful not to touch the blood-charcoal mixture, Chase reached down and picked up the book.
Chase smiled to himself.“Ummm?” Lily said puzzled. “It was my mother’s favorite book.” Chase explained. “Oh” Lily muttered. She was disgusted by the things inside the hole. Chase slowly looked down at the aged book. The title was Yortsed. “Look at the title!” Chase said. Lily frowned. “What does that mean?” She asked. “ I don’t know, but I’ve seen it before.” Quickly, he told her about his venture into the library.
Lily looked spellbound. “So you… you’ve seen the cat that you saw in that picture, and the label said Yortsed, Tnuah, Live, and the Repsihw in bigger letters below it? Strange!” Chase then reached down and turned the cover over.
