Chase spun around. Frozen, standing with one toe on top of a broken twig, and one foot behind her, was Lilly. Chase breathed in a sigh of relief and anger. Just Lilly.
“ Go back to your house and leave me alone!” Chase growled. Lily began to cry. But they were not normal tears. Lily was crying blood. Chase stopped in his tracks. “Lily, what’s wrong?” Sobbing she looked up.
“ If I go back there… I’ll- I’ll be killed.” She put her hands to her face. “ What do you mean? Lily! LILY!” Chase bent down to Lilly’s bloodstained face. “ If I go back there. I’ll die. I’ll hang on the wall like all the other people who tried. Innocent people.” She answered. She started to sob again.
Chase, wanting the blood to stop, took a deep breath. “ I know what you mean. You’ve been through a lot. I have to. I was playing in the yard with a little girl. I don’t remember who. All of a sudden, someone screamed. I was pinned to the ground by something- like an invisible force. I couldn’t see.”
“I looked around for the little girl. But she was gone. I went back to my house- or what had been a house. It was in ruins. I remember crying for hours. For the first time in my life, I was alone.” Chase stopped. He was choking back tears.
Lily looked down at her knees. “ We’ve got to do something!”
