Chase thought about what he had just seen. He had been almost positive that the deaths were just a bad disease. But then he considered the fact that the crime scene was left empty, with no trace of the victim, Mr. Crandy had said. But then he had gone on to say: Except for… and then he had saw Chase. Chase cocked his head to one side like he always did when he was thinking. He closed his eyes. After a couple of seconds, he opened his eyes again.
Staring back at him was a naked, skeletal, pink cat. Its eyes were deep green. The cat prowled closer to Chase. He backed up against the wall behind him. The cat then whispered in a very low voice. “ Beware of the Whisperer. Whisperer!” Then it disintegrated in front of Chase. Frozen in fear, Chase cautiously edged closer to the pile of ashes. He poked them with his bare toe.
The ashes whooshed up and took the form of a book. Then it screamed. “WHISPERER” The next thing he knew, Chase was unconscious.
