Lily stared at the picture and the book for about ten seconds and then asked, “Do you suppose that the other books might be tnuah and live?” “Mabe…” Chase stood there thinking.
Chase, thinking he heard something, spun around. He gripped Lily’s arm tightly. “ Lily. Look.” He whispered. They watched as light began leaking through the cracks in the door. There was two identical clicks. Lily tugged Chase’s sleeve and pulled him into a dark corner just as the door (again magically) opened.
Lily gasped as a brown clog stepped through the now open door. For some reason, Chase’s head snapped back to the picture of the cat. The cat stood proud and regal in its picture frame. Then, it blinked.
Lily’s hand smothered his scream as the cat jumped down from the picture frame, leaving an empty canvas. It glanced back at them for a second, then went to the front door. Mrs. Tart was putting her bag down on the counter. When the cat rubbed against her leg, Mrs. Tart looked down. “ Hello sweety pie. Have you been a good kitty? Let’s go, now.” She said in the most evil way.
Mrs. Tart and the cat began to walk away. They disappeared behind a bookshelf. After a little while, they heard the creak of a door opening and Mrs. Tart’s voice. “In you go little guy!” She said mushily.
Chase and Lily slowly turned their heads to lock eyes with each other. “We have to find the books. I just know it.” Chase said. “ I agree.” Lily replied. Together, they snuck carefully back out of the library. Back into the darkness. With nothing but each other.
