“Hunter, don’t” Kydlin laid a hand on his shoulder. He looked back at her helplessly and she felt a wave of empathy. “They’re trying to give us time to complete the mission. Let’s not let them down,” she gave him an even look. Hunter desperately wanted to help them, but he knew Kydlin was right.
“Come on,” he said quietly. He started down the tunnel they were in, guilt heavy on his chest. He shouldn’t have even allowed the apprentices to come. He had been in these tunnels before and he found it wasn’t hard to maneuver through them. It was mostly thanks to his powers.
“Hunter it’s starting to get dark,” Kydlin said moving closer to him. She was right. The torches were getting very sparse and it was getting to the point when you could hardly see your hand in front of your face. They had to be going in the right direction. The air down in the tunnels was cold, but down this passage way it got even colder. Beside him, Hunter could feel Kydlin shivering.
“It’s okay, just keep close to me,” he told her softly. He stopped for a moment letting his senses focus on Kydlin. He could sense everything around them. It was just like seeing only he could understand more. He knew exactly where Kydlin was and how everything was in relation to her. It just took focus. Very gently he put his hand around her waist. “I’ll guide you,” he said. She nodded mutely, a movement only he could see. Together they continued down the hall.
Suddenly the tunnel expanded and dumped them out in a large room. It was pitch black and Hunter tightened his grip around Kydlin’s waist. She was still shivering and he was aware that in this room the temperature had dropped five degrees. His eyes were wide open, scanning the room, his senses creating a clear image for him. There were rows of stacked boxes along the walls.
“What do you see?” Kydlin whispered. Hunter looked over at her and saw that her eyes were open, trying desperately to see. Fear was clear on her face. She didn’t like the dark especially when she had no idea of where she was. She looked over at him almost as if sensing he was watching her. It was clear in her face that she wanted to reach out and make sure he was still all there. He gave her waist a squeeze of reassurance.
“There’s a bunch of boxes stacked along the walls,” he finally answered looking back to the boxes. Very carefully, he led her over to them. He slowly removed his hand from her waist so he could take one of the boxes off the stack. Kydlin reached out her hand finding his side. She grabbed his shirt gripping it tightly in her hand.
“Don’t worry I’m not going anywhere,” he assured her. Her hand still didn’t let go of his shirt. With the box in front of him he opened its top. Instantly he recoiled from its contents. Kydlin lost her hold on his shirt.
“Hunter?” she asked looking around hopelessly. Her voice shook a little bit and he couldn’t tell if it was from the cold or if it was because she was scared. He presumed it was mostly due to the later.
“I’m still here,” he said quickly.
“What is it?” she asked knowing something was wrong. He chewed on the inside of his lip.
“Guns. The boxes are full of guns,” he finally managed to say. Before Kydlin could reply the room was filled with light. Hunter screamed in pain falling to his knees. He brought his hands to his eyes trying to shield them, but the damage was already done. His senses had been open completely and unprepared for the light. If he had had his eyes closed then he knew he would’ve been fine. But he hadn’t. The light had flooded his senses and sight. All he could see was a burning white light and his senses were overwhelmed leaving him with no idea of his surroundings and in terrible pain.
“Hunter!” Kydlin exclaimed. She dropped down beside him putting her hands on his shoulders. Looking up she could see the overhead lights that hung from the ceiling. Decimators were starting to come into the room looking angry. Suddenly a loud alarm was sounding. Hunter was shaking, tiny moans of pain escaping his lips. “We have to go!” Kydlin put her arm under his, urging him to his feet. She felt him trying to keep on his feet, but she still supported him almost fully. Now it was her turn to lead him.
“Stay with me,” she said as his head ducked down a couple times. The last thing she needed was for him to fall unconscious. She half dragged him toward one of the tunnels as the Decimators ran toward them. Just ten feet into the tunnel it spilled into the outside. The outside air was refreshing and clear after being in the tunnels. The only sign she had that Hunter hadn’t fallen unconscious was the shuffling of his feet as he tried to keep up with her dragging him. The moon was full, casting plenty of light for Kydlin to tell they had come out at an abandoned train station. There were shouts coming from the tunnel and in a second Decimators were pouring out onto the train station.
“Hunter please I need your help,” Kydlin begged him. The Decimators were closing in and would make quick work of them. Hunter’s eyes were closed tightly and he had gone slightly limp in her arms. As if hearing her plead his eyes flickered open. His face was drawn tight in pain, but he was looking more alert.
“I can see blurry shapes, but that’s all,” he said painfully. He pulled away from her a bit trying to support himself.
“You shouldn’t be here Protectors!” one of the Decimators snarled. It was as if those words snapped the rest of the Decimators into action. They all suddenly charged. Kydlin snapped her wrist forward each hand now holding a pure white whip that moved as if it was made out of light. She lashed out as the Decimators fighting hard to keep them at bay.
Hunter stood on his own his vision blurred and painful. Decimators came at him left and right, but he managed to fight them. Slowly but surely his vision became more focused and his power returned to him. He became more steady and quick. Together, Kydlin and he held their own for a few moments.
“Enough!” a loud commanding voice suddenly boomed. Every Decimator froze their attention leaving Kydlin and Hunter. The man that had spoken was broad shouldered and average height. He had well toned muscles visible through his shirt. His eyes were a dark grey and his hair was a deep brown. There was an air of command about him.
“You two are in a load of trouble,” he said watching them like a scientist would new specimens. Hunter tried to stand tall. His pain had almost left completely. Kydlin’s shoulder brushed his.
“Who are you?” she asked bravely. The man laugh, a deep cackle, then his eyes narrowed on her.
“I should be asking you that, not the other way around. My name is Kane,” he looked over at Hunter. “I can tell easily who you are. I am more in wonder of why you’re here. The leader of the Protectors,” he looked back at Kydlin, “From the rumors I’ve heard I’m guessing your Kydlin. Ha! The Leader and his girl at my mercy,”
Kydlin bristled and started to raise her hand to attack with one of her whips, but Hunter grabbed her hand and forcefully kept it lowered. She looked at him angrily and he shook his head. She would be killed instantly. This made Kane laugh again.
“You’re smart to keep her on such a short leash,” he chided. Kydlin took a step forward her mouth twisted into a snarl. Hunter quickly pulled her back blocking Kane from her view.
“Kydlin, no. He’ll just kill you,” Hunter whispered to her. She met his eyes and he could see the anger raging inside of her.
“He has no right to say those things,” she hissed.
“You should listen to the man,” Kane suggested with a dangerous tone. Hunter turned to face Kane but he still kept himself in front of Kydlin as if to keep her safe.
“You know why we’re here. Guns are outlawed! Even for Decimators its low,” Hunter growled.
“We’re bad guys it’s what we do,” Kane retorted. Kydlin stepped out from behind Hunter.
“Only cowards would hide behind guns!” she spat furiously. Kane’s face contorted for a moment and rage flashed in his eyes. Hunter quickly put himself in front of Kydlin again.
“You should watch your mouth,” he said his voice wavering with anger. Hunter and he met eyes. Suddenly Hunter made a choking noise. He clutched at his throat and fell onto his knees.
“Hunter!” Kydlin looked at him helplessly. “What are you doing to him? Stop! Please stop!” she looked over at Kane pleadingly. Hunter bent over. No matter how hard he tried to get air it wouldn’t come. “Please,” Kydlin begged him. She got on her knees next to Hunter and tried to help him, but there was nothing she could do. Kane studied her carefully all the while Hunter was choking. “Kane, please!” she screamed. Hunter’s face was red. He was on the ground, now, barely moving. Kane snapped his fingers and Hunter was gasping for air. Kydlin let out a breath of relief almost hugging Hunter. He sat up still breathing heavily and glared at Kane.
“Like I said earlier, you’re at my mercy,” Kane smiled viciously.
Note: Just realized Kane's power is kinda like Darth Vador! I'll have to fix that later! Thanks for reading! Feel free to message me! I will post more soon!
