Chapter 7
Kyle spared a moment to watch the girls disappear down the tunnels they had chosen. Two men chased after each of them leaving him with the biggest man and two others. The big man smiled at him. “Reese, Mac, let’s make this quick,” he said to the other two. Kyle didn’t waste another moment; he started to run keeping his wings folded between his shoulder blades.
“Stop running boy! It will be easier just to stand and fight,” the big man growled after him. Kyle had no idea where he was going and three men were chasing him. It was just his luck something like this would happen. The big man was quick for his size and was grabbing Kyle only a few moments after he started running. His grip was tight and painful. He had hold of Kyle’s shoulder. Kyle whirled around and struck a jab to his throat. The man had caught his hand in the air and bent his arm backwards. Kyle bit his lip to keep in a moan of pain.
It seemed the man had the power of some sort of fast reflex maybe even super strength as well. “I told you not to run,” the man whispered in his ear. Kyle’s hand was now pinned against his back painfully. He tried to get free, but only ended up causing himself even more pain.
“You already caught him?” Reese had appeared at the end of the hall with Mac. The big man smiled then as if to make a point put his hand on the back of Kyle’s neck and shoved his head forward.
“He isn’t the brightest,” the man laughed. Kyle resented the comment and brought his leg backward into the man’s crouch. It was strange to hear such a big man make such a high pitch sound. His grip on Kyle’s arm loosened momentarily and it was enough to allow Kyle to wiggle free. “You...” the man glared at Kyle holding himself painfully. Mac and Reese where already running toward him. Kyle ducked a fist from Mac and opened his wings briefly, obscuring the man’s vision of him. Folding his wings again he threw a punch in Mac’s face. It was a complete success. Mac stumbled backwards into Reese.
The big man had finally recovered and he looked furious. Kyle shrugged an apology and ducked under the man’s arms. Suddenly he heard Tohoak scream. His heart hammered in his chest and he wondered if she had been hurt. He also couldn’t help wondering if Lacy was okay. They were his friends and he had to help them.
He started to run back down the tunnel only to have something snag on his ankle and trip him. He fell face first onto the tunnel floor. He pushed himself to his knees and wiped the dirt from his face. It seemed like he was going to have to deal with these guys first.
Looking backwards he saw Reese’s hand slowly stretching back to his body. That’s what had grabbed his ankle. He shivered a bit disturbed; those with the power to stretch their limbs slightly creeped him out. Suddenly the light of the tunnel was blocked from view and a booted foot kicked his back.
Kyle fell back onto the floor looking up to see the big man towering over him. “Get him up. Now!” he snarled back at Reese and Mac. The two obeyed immediately grabbing Kyle by his arms and hoisting him to his feet. Kyle looked at the big man warily.
“Is it too late to say sorry?” Kyle asked wincing. The man almost smiled then he brought his fist into Kyle’s gut. Kyle felt his legs start to buckle and he gave a small moan. “I didn’t think so,” he said hoarsely.
“Not so tough now are you?” the man hissed into his face.
“You really need a breath mint,” Kyle coughed trying to rid the man’s breath from his face. There was another punch to his gut and this time his legs did buckle.
“Take him to Kane, maybe he’ll learn some respect there.”
