Chapter 17
Kyle paced back and forth. It had been over an hour since he had been shoved into a cell. The walls were cold and hard and the bars were rusted. Two Decimators stood guard outside of the cell. Every once in a while they would look in at him to see if he was still there. As if he could escape without them knowing! He exhaled loudly and glared at the back of the guards. What could Kane possibly want with them?
Suddenly the guards parted and the cell door was open. Kyle jerked into action rushing the door. He ran head on into Lacy as she was pushed into the cell. She yelped and fell against the door and he fell backwards. The guards laughed and closed the door flinging Lacy forward. Kyle was back on his feet and he caught her before she crashed into the wall.
“Are you okay?” he asked letting her go. Lacy nodded and brushed herself off. “They caught you as well then,” he muttered slumping down to the ground and resting his head against the wall.
“They caught Tohoak.” Lacy winced as she said it, but it was pointless to keep the truth from Kyle. “She was with a boy they said was Kane’s son,” she added. He looked up at that.
“Is he the one who caught her?” Kyle asked. Lacy slowly shook her head.
“I don’t think so. They said he was found with her. Maybe they ran into each other when in the tunnels,” she shrugged.
“What does he want with us?” Kyle glared at the floor. Lacy wondered if he was angry with the Decimators or with himself for being caught. She looked at him with empathy. It was easy for her to relate to.
“Kane made some big talk about how it was all opportunity and pay back at Hunter, but I know there’s a lot more to it. He said something about a plan but didn’t emphasize on it.,” Lacy said bitterly. She hadn’t been impressed with Kane’s speech. There was movement outside the cell. The door opened and Tohoak was forced in. She struggled against the Decimators but they managed to get the door closed.
“Where’s Rebel?” she demanded angrily. The guards turned their backs to her and she slammed her fist against the bars with a frustrated cry.
“Tohoak,” Lacy said her name carefully. Tohoak looked back at Kyle and Lacy realizing she wasn’t alone in the cell.
“I see neither of you made it back to camp,” she said with a sigh. Kyle looked up at her with a faint smile. It looked almost forced.
“You didn’t either,” he pointed out smugly. Tohoak flashed him a brief glare. Her head jerked back toward the front of the cell as they heard a scuffle. There was a creak as the cell next to theirs opened.
“Get him in the cell!” an angry voice snarled. There were more sounds of a struggle then the cell door screeched closed. Tohoak listened carefully and tried her best to see what was happening, but was unable.
“Rebel?” she called anxiously.
“It’s me,” came a pained reply. “Are you okay?” Tohoak sighed a breath of relief.
“I’m great,” she answered lamely. In truth she was tired and scared, but she wasn’t going to let anyone know that. Kyle came to his feet giving Tohoak a confused look. Lacy shared the same look.
“Who is he?” Kyle asked. Tohoak considered telling them what had happened, but decided it was a story for another time.
“He’s a friend,” she answered shortly. Kyle’s eyes narrowed, but he didn’t say anything. Lacy frowned.
“He’s Kane’s son isn’t he?” her tone was more curious than accusing. Tohoak was going to answer but Rebel beat her to it.
“Don’t remind me,” he called sarcastically. Lacy stared at the wall that separated the cells with a scowl.
“What will he do with you?” she asked. Tohoak found herself wondering the same thing. There was a moment of silence before Rebel replied.
“It doesn’t matter. The question is: what will he do with you?” he said. It bothered Tohoak that he had avoided the question, but he did make a good point.
“We’ve already discussed that. Kane talked forever about toying with Hunter then mentioned something about a plan, but he didn’t explain it more than that,” Lacy said sounding slightly annoyed.
“That’s Kane for you. He likes to explain false things to keep the real truth hidden. Don’t get me wrong, he probably is toying with Hunter but there’s a lot more to it than that,” Rebel said. His voice was bitter. Kyle’s eyes flashed determinedly.
“We have to find a way out of here,” he said standing up. One of the guards snickered at that.
“You’ll be going nowhere boy,” the guard said. Kyle ignored him and grabbed the bars then yanked on them hard. The door creaked but didn’t budge. Kyle pulled at them again. “Stop that!” the guard growled. Kyle continued to ignore him and did it again. The bars weren’t going to break. He was simply doing what he could do: try. Sitting and doing nothing was unacceptable in his eyes. “I said stop!” the guard snarled. He went to force Kyle away from the bars, but he suddenly jerked back. Someone had struck him in the face. The other guard jerked into action, but he suddenly cried out and brought his hands to his eyes. This person moved quickly almost in a blur.
“Hel-” the guards cry was cut off as he crumpled to the floor. A moment later the other did the same.
“Rebel?” it was an older boy who looked to be twenty-two or twenty-three. His eyes were a neat dark blue and his hair was a dark shade of brown. He had a strong jaw line and a lean figure.
“Legend!” Rebel’s voice was excited and almost happy. Kyle drew back away from the cell door warily. This boy had taken down both the guards in a matter of seconds. The boy’s eyes briefly passed over the cell they were in before he moved toward Rebel’s cell.
“Are you okay? Did Dad hurt you at all?” he asked snatching the keys from the unconscious guards and unlocking Rebel’s cell. Now Tohoak had a clear view of Rebel. There was a smile on his face and he hugged the older boy. She thought Rebel had called him Legend.
“I’m fine. It’s good to see you brother.” he said quietly. Legend smiled faintly and hugged Rebel back.
“We need to get out of here before someone comes down here,” he said pulling away. Rebel nodded then stopped and looked over at Tohoak.
“We have to take them with us,” he said. Legend followed his brother’s eyes. He shook his head.
“We can’t. I used my powers on the guards and blinded them for ten seconds so I could knock them out. When they wake up they’ll know it was me who attacked them. Father won’t be happy, but he’ll tolerate it. He knows that we’re close,” Legend explained. Rebel winced and knew what his brother meant by tolerate. Kane would be furious at Legend for helping Rebel escape and would punish him in any way Kane deemed fit. Kane prized Legend and made it known he was the favorite between Rebel and him. That was the only reason Legend would be left alive after helping his brother escape. Kane would blame it on Legend’s loyalty to his little brother and would make sure to punish him thoroughly. Legend continued, “If we break them out Father wouldn’t go easy on me anymore. It would be certain death. He has big plans for them. I wish I could, Rebel, but I can’t,”
Rebel knew his brother was right. “Then just come with us!” he said. He already knew Legend would say no. His brother disagreed fully with everything the Decimators did, but kept his thoughts secret. He stayed for Rebel’s sake. If he left their father would search for them day and night and not stop till they were dead. So Legend stayed, talking his father into leaving Rebel alone and obeying like a good little soldier; one of Kane’s best. Of course that didn’t mean that the Decimators didn’t keep an eye out for Rebel. It just meant they weren’t directly looking for him and because of that he got by.
“You know I can’t,” Legend said softly. Rebel looked away his eyes a mixture of emotions. Tohoak looked at Kyle and Lacy.
“Just go Rebel. We’ll be fine,” she said. Rebel looked at her.
“No. I said I would get you back to your camp and I will,” he said his eyes hardening.
“Get back to their camp then. Tell their leader that Kane has something big planned. Something to do with Mark Hightower and the Unabilitied. Tell him he needs to form a strong alliance with the Unabilitied. That’s all I know of Father’s plan, but you have to warn the Protectors. You can help them in that way,” Legend said quickly. Rebel considered this.
“He’s right. We can find our own way to get free. Just warn Hunter,” Kyle nodded. They had to warn Hunter that Kane was planning something more than he was letting on.
“But I don’t know where your camp is!” Rebel said. There was a commotion down the hall.
“You’ll find it just go!” Lacy said quickly. Before Rebel could say anything else his brother shoved him forward. They hadn’t made it to the end of the tunnel before Decimators came out of the near tunnels. Rebel scrambled backwards into his brother.
“You won’t be warning Hunter of anything!” the biggest Decimator gave a toothy grin. “Your father knew Legend would try to help you so he made sure we followed your brother. You’re right Legend; your father is going to make you pay highly for this,” he growled. Behind him Rebel heard his brother curse. The Decimators attacked.
“Watch his hands!” the big Decimator warned. Legend was already moving though. He moved in front of Rebel and his hand flashed forward at the first Decimator. He struck the woman in the face and immediately her eye sight left. He then kicked out at her feet and she fell to the ground with a frightened cry. He moved to the next Decimator and swung his left hand forward. Before his hand made contact the big man grabbed it and yanked Legend backwards. Legend let out a small gasp of pain and flashed his right hand toward the big man’s face. The man caught it swiftly and twisted it painfully. Legend met Rebel’s eyes.
“Run! Take my bike, your sword’s with it,” he said quickly. Legend screamed as the man yanked his left hand and there was a pop as his shoulder was dislocated. The man kicked Legend and threw him to the side turning toward Rebel. There was no time to worry about his brother as the big man started toward him. Rebel took off running as fast as he could. He was faster than the other Decimators and he knew the tunnels just as well. After several turns he shot out of the tunnels. To the right was the city but he turned left. A small grouping of trees stood before him. This was where Legend hid his bike. Rebel raced into the trees knowing exactly where to head. Behind him he could hear footsteps and heavy breathing. The Decimators had caught up.
His heart beat fast in his chest and his eyes searched the trees carefully. There. It was something you had to know was there to find it. Thick branches covered the bike and Rebel wasted no time and pulling them off. Underneath was a sleek, black motorcycle. As Legend had said Rebel’s sword lay beside it. Rebel grabbed his sword, threw the strap of the sheath onto his shoulder, and climbed onto the bike. The Decimators were ten feet away and running fast. The keys were already in the ignition and without hesitation Rebel brought the bike to life. It hummed underneath him and he gave it a little gas. The wheel spun and it shot forward away from the Decimators with a growl.
Rebel bent into the bike becoming one with it then he road toward the edge of the city facing the rising sun. He had to find the Protectors.
