Tohoak stayed close to Rebel as they were led into the tunnels. Her heart beat fast in her chest. Though he tried to hide it she could tell Rebel was tense as well. It hadn’t been much of a shock that Rebel’s father was a Decimator. In the back of her mind she had known he was keeping something from her. The way he had spoke of Kane before made her realize that his father was in a position of power. She guessed he was the leader of the Decimators. It would be just her luck.
Decimators stood in front and behind them. Every once in a while they would give Rebel a rough shove as if to tease him. Up ahead someone was walking toward them. Beside her Rebel swallowed hard.
“Let me see him,” it was a woman’s voice. The Decimators stopped and reluctantly parted. She had long red hair and deep blue eyes. “Rebel,” she smiled softly. Rebel looked away from her as if disgraced. Tohoak suddenly felt like she was intruding in a private moment. The woman’s eyes flickered over to Tohoak and narrowed. “You make the most peculiar friends,” she said her voice suddenly sounding bitter.
“Kane’s waiting, ahead.” she looked back at the Decimators briefly. With one last glance at Rebel and Tohoak she left. The whole encounter left Tohoak’s head hurting. She wondered if that had been Rebel’s mother. How had he ended up so different from them? They were moving forward again walking further into the tunnel system.
The tunnel they were in suddenly opened into a larger room. Standing at the center was a man with dark eyes. He smiled at them then with a flick of his hand the Decimators left. Tohoak watched them leave with surprise. Did this man think they wouldn’t try to fight him?
“It’s good to see you again son. I do appreciate you bringing your friend along as well. We’ve been looking for her,” he spoke as if they had come by their own. Tohoak looked at Kane with anger. No wonder Rebel hated his father.
“I wish I could say the same,” Rebel glared at his father. Kane frowned ever so slightly.
“You continue to disappoint me. I was hoping you would change your mind about being a Decimator. Your brother holds a high rank. I’m sure you could do the same,” he looked thoughtful as he spoke.
“You don’t understand. I hate you and everything you stand for! I left because I couldn’t stand you.” Rebel said angrily. Kane’s face suddenly contorted and his eyes flashed dangerously.
“All you do is run. What are you going to do when there’s no where left to run? Who’s going to help you then?” his voice was a deadly whisper. “Lock them up!” he suddenly growled. Three Decimators came from the tunnels and Tohoak realized they had never been alone. Rebel looked over at Tohoak an expression she couldn’t read on his face.
“You have me father, but there’s no point in keeping her,” he said as one of the Decimators grabbed his arm.
“Don’t try to bargain with me now. She and her friends are important to my plan. Why would I let Hunter’s apprentice escape? How would that profit me?” he shook his head looking at his son in disappointment, “Take them away,”
As his son and Hunter’s apprentice were taken from his sight, Kane turned to one of the Decimators. “Tomorrow find a Protector in the city. I have a message for Hunter,”
