Chapter 12
Lacy walked beside D. Every few minutes he would look over at her to make sure she was still there. “We’re only ten minutes away from camp now,” he informed her. Lacy nodded and yawned. All she wanted to do was sleep when really she should be worried about her friends. D looked back at her. “If you want I could carry you back the rest of the way,” he offered. Lacy shook her head.
“I’m good. Just a bit tired that’s all,” she said. D nodded looking at her empathetically.
“If Kydlin were here she would be proud of you,” he told her. Lacy laughed and looked at him skeptically.
“For what? Running away?” she asked. D shook his head.
“You held your own against two Decimators!” he said. Lacy didn’t consider it much of a feat.
“Two Decimators, really?” a woman blocked their path. She had long curly red hair and deep blue eyes, “How about seven?” Decimators appeared from the shadows to stand beside her. D went tense beside Lacy.
“We don’t want any trouble,” he assured the woman. Lacy wondered what kind of powers the Decimators had. D knew they were outnumbered, but he could also tell what sort of powers the Decimators had. He would know best if they would win or not. The woman smiled at him.
“We do though,” she nodded to the other Decimators, “Get the girl,”
D looked at Lacy. “Get behind me,” he ordered her. Lacy was going to argue that she could help, but the look he gave silenced her. “Only three of them have stronger powers,” he called back to the other Protectors. “Lacy, if anything happens and we can’t keep you safe run back to camp as fast as you can. Its only ten minutes away.” He finished. There was something in his eyes the Lacey didn’t like.
Suddenly the Decimators attacked. D leaped backward as the woman swung a fist at him. “You’re a power sensor aren’t you?” she asked with a roundhouse kick making him back up even further.
“Yes,” he answered tersely. Finally he had an opening and he flashed forward jabbing her throat then punching her side. She coughed and her eyes watered, but she still blocked his next kick and connected with his side.
“Then you should know I’m taking it easy on you,” she said. Her hands were cover in flames and she smiled wickedly at him. “I have fire and you have nothing,” she laughed striking a fist toward his head. D ducked, letting her fiery fist fly over his head, but her foot came up smashing into his face. D stumbled backwards slightly, a look of pain on his face. He looked back up at her only to see a ball of flame coming at him. Rolling to the side, he narrowly missed getting hit.
She did a somersault and landed in front of him. “You can’t get away that easy,” she laughed. D swiped his leg at hers and she fell backwards. When he looked around he saw the other Protectors were barely holding their own. They were outnumbered and nearly outmatched. He looked back at Lacy.
“Run!” he ordered. Her eyes widened, but then she nodded and did as she was told. The woman was back on her feet and her fist slammed into D’s jaw sending him rocking backward. Lacy could hear the impact over her breathing as she ran.
“Get her!” light footsteps echo behind her and she ran at full speed. She had to get away. Hands grabbed at her shoulders and tugged her backwards.
“Let me go!” Lacy screamed furiously. Ice started to form on her fingers and the air around her started to get cold. The hands let go and she spun around to face her attacked. The woman D had been fighting stood before her. Lacy looked past her and saw that D lay motionless on the ground.
“You think you can fight me?” the woman asked mockingly. Lacy made a brave face and stood tall. The woman sneered at her then held out a flaming hand. Lacy immediately stepped back. She didn’t do well with heat. “That’s what I thought,” she growled. Lacy took a deep breath and tried to steady herself. She had to fight. Her hands glowed an icy blue and ice crystals started to form. The woman’s eyes flickered to something behind Lacy. “I would love to fight you kid, but we have to leave before anymore of your friends show up,” she nodded.
Lacy looked confused for a moment. When it finally dawned that someone was standing behind her it was too late. Something heavy hit her head and suddenly everything went black.
