Kane stared after the train that was taking the leader of the Protectors away. He had been so close. Kane shook his head furiously. He looked over to the Decimators who had let Hunter and Kydlin get away. “Rid yourselves from my sight you imbeciles!” he screamed at them. They scattered disappearing back into the tunnels.
“Sir?” a tentative voice called. Kane rubbed his forehead agitatedly.
“What?” he asked looking back toward the tunnels. Two Decimators, Kane thought their names might be Mac and Reese, stood in the entrance to the tunnels a boy held in between them. “I thought I told you not to bring new recruits to me,” he said shaking his head disappointedly. He was surrounded by idiots.
“We found him in the tunnels with two girls. Tyler said to bring him here,” one of them spoke up. Kane’s interest suddenly peaked. He liked Tyler. The big man was loyal and very strong. One of the only smart Decimators Kane knew.
“What was he doing?” Kane asked. This question gave the men some courage and they came out of the tunnel slightly.
“We don’t know Sir. He and the girls came out of nowhere. He put up a fight though,” Mac said. Kane nodded then motioned for them to come closer. The boy watched Kane warily and he dragged his feet as Mac and Reese walked forward.
“Don’t be afraid boy,” Kane said. The boy smirked and Kane saw his face was smeared with dirt.
“I’m not afraid just disgusted,” he said. Reese punched him in the gut and the boy gave a slight groan.
“You should watch your mouth when speaking to Kane,” Reese said.
“What’s your name?” Kane asked ignoring Reese. The boy looked back up at Kane then spat in Kane’s face. Both Decimators gasp and Reese punch the boy again, hard enough to make him fall. Kane wiped the spit from his face and looked down at the boy who lay on his side hugging his gut.
“What’s your name?” he repeated. Mac put his foot on the boy’s side and started applying pressure.
“Kyle,” the boy coughed. Mac took his foot off Kyle and Reese pulled him up onto his feet.
“Did you catch the girls as well?” Kane asked Reese as Kyle glared at him. Reese shook his head.
“No sir.” he didn’t meet Kane’s eye. Kane saw Kyle smile.
“You were with Hunter and Kydlin weren’t you?” Kane demanded. Kyle looked up alarmed. It was pleasing to see his smile had vanished.
“What’d you do to them?” he asked quickly. There was a trace of fear in his voice.
“Nothing. They escaped, but now we have you,” Kane smiled. “Whose apprentice are you?”
Kyle didn’t say anything. Kane was starting to get annoyed with the boy. There was a fine line between bravery and stupidity and the boy was just about to cross it. “Tell me now or tell me later boy, but I will find out,” he warned. Kyle looked indecisive, but finally spoke.
“Colter,” he said lowering his head. After a quick look at Reese, Kane knew Kyle was telling the truth. Reese came in handy from time to time. He was an idiot but his ability to sense lies was very useful.
“And the girls’ mentors?” Kane asked. He recognized the boy’s mentor immediately. Other than Kydlin, Colter was Hunter’s closest friend.
“D and Henry,” Kyle replied. When Kane looked at Reese the Decimator shook his head. This boy was trying to keep his friends safe, but he was better off just telling the truth. Kane would always get the truth. No matter what.
“Don’t lie to me boy!” Kane growled. Kyle shook his head. They were his friends and he couldn’t give them up. “Tell me now or when I find them they’ll be even worse off than you!” he snarled. Kyle still didn’t speak. Kane had a good guess as to who the mentors were.
“Hunter and Kydlin am I wrong? Why would they bring any apprentices other than their own?” Kane asked. Kyle’s eyes flickered and that was all Kane needed. “Find the girls as soon as you can. If we can catch them before they get back to camp we may have a way to continue with our plan,” he said quickly.
Kyle jerked in Reese and Mac’s arms. “You’ll never find them. Their probably already back at camp,” he spat. Kane shook his head.
“This is a big city. To a young apprentice it is a maze,” he said smiling. “I highly doubt that they’ve made it back to camp yet,”
