Among the Rubble
Chapter 1
Ashton crouched low as he watched the man approach ashes raining down around him. His father lay dead among the rubble his mother vanished at the site of the man leaving Ashton and Theodore in this terrible place. Men and women spun and dipped and leaped about, lights flashed smoke rose, the night air warming. Silently the two boys wept in the tight hiding place. The tears cutting tracks through the ash and mud.
The fight went on until the sun began to rise. As the few remaining fighters began to vanish the tall slender man that had frightened so many away when he first appeared Approached the boys hiding place. He no longer looked so scary, rather he looked like a tired old man.
Boys it's okay now you can come out. Ashton looked at Theo, he shook his head "no, Ash stay here." Ashton paused for only a moment somehow he knew everything was okay, it was all about to change. Breaking free from his brothers tight grip he climbed out into the open. Theo scrambled out behind him ready to defend his younger brother.
The old man smiled "Ah, Theodore I am glad you decided to join us. Do not fear I am not your enemy. I am here to bring you to safety. There is a place where you will be cherished for your gifts rather then beaten down and enslaved. A place were you will not have to be afraid to feel. Would you like to come with me to this place?" Theo squared his feet, "And how are we to know you are sincere How are we to know we can trust you?" Theo shouted back at the man.
"Theodore, you would be a fool to blindly trust me or anyone else for that matter. You and your brother Ashton do however have a unique talent, use that talent." Theo looked at the man in complete bewilderment. "Our intuition, Theo, he means use our intuition. We can trust him." Ashton the sharper of the to whispered. The man stepped forward and took both boys hands; all three vanished leaving behind the smoldering remain of their keeper and their keeper's demolished home.
