Potions Essay #3

Chapter 6
• Describe the lab setup as you found it today.

Sia was a hairbreadth away from being late. Again. Thankfully, she saw that everyone was still getting settled when she burst through the dungeon doors. With a muttered apology to the Professor, she skirted around the desks and took her place next to her friends. Everyone was unusually quiet – probably the building anticipation for brewing their first potion. She felt quite scatter-brained today, and was relieved that the Slytherin table was being quiet for once, and that everyone was currently focused on setting things up according to procedure.

Sia quickly set up her cauldron and other tools, nearly dropping her scales in her haste. She forced herself to slow down after that near accident, it would not do to break something valuable on the first day simply because she was worried about being the last to finish the potion. Her hands were shaking, and she took a deep breath. It was a simple potion, there was no need to get so worked up.

Somewhere over where the Gryfinndors were clustered a girl let out a shrill shriek. Apparently she'd dropped her cauldron on her foot, the Professor hurried past to investigate. Apparently Sia wasn't the only one who was nervous.

• Describe the brewing experience. Mention anything interesting you noticed in brewing, or any small or large errors you may have made.

Crushing the snake fangs were considerably harder than Sia had expected. She wasn't the only one, her friend over on her left was muttering frantically to herself as she viciously hammered at her snake fangs with the pestle.

"Be more gentle, and keep a firmer grip on the pestle," muttered Sia, glowering at her friend. She was being extremely distracting.

Everything was going well enough, but a few of her classmates were most certainly having trouble. Someone's cauldron was smoking and turning a nasty shade of grey, and the smell was absolutely horrendous. The Professor, shaking her head, scourgified the pot before telling the student to start over again.

After giving her wand a clockwise wave, Sia saw that her mixture was taking on a pinkish hue – though a little grey around the edges. It was most likely because she was a few minutes late getting the snake fangs in.

Relieved, Sia relaxed a little and allowed herself to watch the pink smoke drifting up through the damp dungeon air.

Some time later, the slug horns were added, and Sia quickly whisked her cauldron off the heat so she could add the quills. Everyone seemed to be remembering this particular step, since so far she could hear no yelps. Her friend frowned and peered at her mixture, it was looking distinctly lumpy.

• Discuss how your Potion turned out as well as how you will store it.

The rest of the procedure went well enough, though she wasn't sure her potion was quite sky blue. Her friend's potion, on the other hand, was the perfect shade of sky blue – but it was still a bit lumpy.

After adding the flobberworm mucus Sia stepped away to stretch a bit. Her muscles were very cramped.

After the five minutes were up, she carefully bottled her - not quite sky blue - potion in a glass phial, marked it, and carefully placed it on the counter. The consistency had turned out perfect, as far as she could tell, but the color still didn't seem quite right.

Sia gave a sigh of relief as she left the dungeon with her friends. All in all it had been a rejuvenating experience, and she had actually quite enjoyed herself. She was quite close to nominating Potions as her favorite class, at the very least, it was among her top three.
