Thestrals: To be Feared?
written by Fern Frondfeather
Thestrals are often misunderstood creatures that have become unnaturally rare in the wizarding world at present, this is due in part to the misconceptions surrounding them. I plan to educate in the hope that some of you will come away with a better understanding of these magnificent creatures.

Chapter 1: Introduction to Thestrals
Chapter 1
For those who have seen a Thestral for themselves, you may feel an uncomfortable twinge when recalling them, which I would hardly blame you for. Being a beast that is visible only after the viewer has seen and known death, is a rather morbid concept in itself. One that many would rather not be confronted with I imagine. For those of you who have not seen or known of a Thestral, they are a type of winged horse that the Ministry of Magic classifies as Beast XXXX - In short, beasts are creatures that play no part in shaping wizarding laws, and the classification: XXXX refers to the creature being considered dangerous, and/or requiring a skilled wizard to train them. This classification can be open to interpretation however, and some would outright dispute it as rather melodramatic.
Wild Thestrals are certainly unpredictable, and even a well trained Thestral is capable of defensive behaviours that could seriously harm a witch or wizard. Yet these beasts wild or tame can also be extremely gentle towards us. Perhaps sensing our grief and acceptance of the loss of a loved one? Intelligent and grossly misunderstood, in my personal opinion their higher ranked classification stems from the nonsensical notion of them being tied to bad omens. In part due to their ties with death.
