Don't Make Your Bed Day

Chapter 11

Imagine falling asleep late one night, after spending endless hours studying nonstop. Imagine swimming around in a wonderful, whimsical dream one second—only to be rudely awakened the next by your obnoxious alarm! Imagine having to get up, get changed, shower, and make your bed. Don’t you detest when you have to perform this ritual… Every. Single. Day?

That's why Don’t Make Your Bed Day exists! It is a celebration that occurs annually on the 21st of December, the shortest day of the year. As the title suggests, it is all about not making your bed in the morning! If you want to go a bit extra, you don’t have to get out of your bed at all—try getting more sleep! You can even forego your morning routine of combing your hair and putting on makeup if you want.

Sleep plays a crucial role in everyone’s life, even though you might not give it much thought at first. Sleep enables your body to shut off (except your brain, of course) and receive some well-needed rest. It is also awesome for your mental health, as proven by thousands of different and comprehensive research! Students and employees in particular need to obtain plenty of sleep as they have to study/work a LOT, and they NEED their rest!

Besides sleeping, why else is Don’t Make Your Bed Day important? Well, it’s a day to rebel against being flawless all the time. All of us have imperfections, of course, and that’s what makes us human! Additionally, don’t you find it a bit… weird? What’s the point of making your bed after waking up when you’re just going to go back to sleep again? Philosophy question #100!

Fun Fact:
You have only one person to thank for this day—a fifth grader! Here are some highlights from a letter he wrote to the Congress in proposal of this celebration!

My name is Shannon Barba and …I am in the fifth grade. I am writing to you to ask that you help me figure out a way to institute Don’t Make Your Bed Day.
Sometimes, I get really tired of making my bed. I think everyone in our country would enjoy one day where they don’t have to make their bed and not feel bad about it.
I appreciate your help and ask that you please send me a response letting me know if you are able to pass a Bill that would make a Don’t Make Your Bed Day.

Well, that’s all I have for this incredible day, ladies and gentlemen. I really must go now—after writing a couple of paragraphs about sleeping, I sure am feeling exhausted all of a—*yawn*—sudden. Make sure to get enough sleep, and remember, it’s okay not to be pristine perfect all the time. We’re all human, so why don’t we embrace it?

Happy Don’t Make Your Bed day!
