Chapter 6
"The Basilisk"

The basilisk can look like a giant venomous snake or like a being with the body of a snake, and the head, wings, and legs of a rooster. This terrifying beast is known for killing its victims with its gaze.

In his “ Naturalis Historia ”, Pliny the Elder describes the basilisk as a small deadly snake living in Northern Africa. The snake is said to be “no more than twelve fingers in length”. The term “basilisk” comes from the Greek “basilikos” meaning “little king”. This refers to the crown the basilisk has on its head.

This being moves around with its body in a straight upward position. Legends say it can break stones by breathing on them and set bushes on fire. The basilisk’s breath turns the creature’s surrounding environment into a desert. Pliny said that if a person uses a spear to kill a basilisk, then the creature’s venom can climb up the spear and kill the individual.

The basilisk cannot stand the rooster’s song nor can it tolerate the smell of a weasel. To kill a basilisk, one can lure and trap it inside a weasel’s den or throw a weasel into the basilisk’s own den. Also, the crow of the rooster causes the instant death of the basilisk. Another way to kill a basilisk is by making it stare at its own reflection in a mirror.

If the basilisk has features of a rooster, it is known as a cockatrice. A basilisk is hatched by a cockerel from the egg of a serpent or a toad, while the cockatrice is hatched from a cockerel’s egg incubated by a toad or serpent. The cockatrice can also result from a hen’s egg being left on a hill and incubated by a toad. Still, the original version of the basilisk remains that of the giant snake.

"The Wyvern and the Ouroboros"

In legends, the wyvern has a reptile body and a dragon’s wings, head and tail, and it moves on two legs. The wyvern must not be confused with a dragon. The sea-wyvern was said to have a fish tail instead of a dragon’s tail. Rarely, the wyvern was believed to have the ability to breathe fire. This creature iwas associated with ice and cold weather and could possess a venomous bite - its name being derived from the Old French “wivre” meaning “viper”.

The ouroboros is the old symbol of the dragon or snake devouring its own tail. It symbolizes cyclicality, the eternal return and the re-creation of self. In Norse mythology, Jormugandr, the great serpent, encircled the world and grasped its tail in its teeth.

"Zombie"

Zombies are "living dead" creatures that dwell in the southern part of the United States of America. They are able to be identified by their greyish skin and rotten smell. While zombies have much in common with Inferi, they are in fact, two distinct creatures.

During the 1991–1992 school year, Hogwarts Defence Against the Dark Arts Professor Quirinus Quirrell told his students that his turban had been given to him as a gift by an African prince for getting rid of a troublesome zombie. However, whenever he was asked how he fought off the zombie, Quirrell would try to change the subject and talk about the weather.

It was eventually revealed that the turban was used to hide the face of Lord Voldemort on the back of Quirrell's head, as he was possessing Quirrell at the time. It is therefore unlikely that Quirrell's story about the zombie was true, and the fact that the native range of zombies is America makes the veracity of the tale regarding the African prince even more dubious.

"Dementors"

Intelligent, immortal and powered by soul-sucking, dementors are the most horrifying prison guards ever conceived. It took, by J.K. Rowling’s own admission, a period of clinical depression for their mere conception. Completely blind, they hunt their victims through a primal sensing of positive emotions, and once found, they replace those emotions with unspeakably awful memories. For Harry, it’s a constant replaying of his mother’s death. Imagine the level of horrible it takes for a predator to not kill you but instead doom you to a fate of forever reliving your worst moment. The mere thought is sadistic and unsettling, like a murderer giving his victim a breath of fresh air every time the sweet release of death gets a little too close.

"Thestrals"

A cross between a horse and a dragon, thestrals are totally invisible, except to those that have witnessed and accepted death. They possess a heightened sense of smell in order to quickly find fresh blood, and they’ve been know to attack both human and wizard when provoked. Hagrid, that crazy half-giant bastard, has taken some steps to domesticate the lot, but it’s still not advisable to turn your back on any animal widely considered an omen of evil. I haven’t and I’m still alive. Coincidence? I doubt it.

"Acromantula"

So let's start this class off with a terrifying beast. An eight eyed beast with long legs that can reach all the way up to fifteen feet. This beast has large pinchers that could take your head off with one snap. That's right I'm talking about the Acromantula. Their pinchers click together when an Acromantula is either excited or angry. These fangs also release very dangerous venom that is so rare it can get up to 100 Galleons a pint in an open market. Getting that venom is not only a dangerous task, but a rare task to embark on. It can also be pretty well assumed that if a Basilisk's venom can destroy a horcrux then so could a Acromantula's. But this theory hasn't been proven yet, considering horcruxes are very rare along with Acromantula Venom. Let's get away from the Acromantula's nasty venom for a bit. Where could such a dangerous create originate from exactly? Well the Acromantula orginated from the country of Borneo. The dense jungle terrain makes it a perfect place for a giant spider to hide. What would they want to hide though? Let's look into this a bit...

Acromantula lay their eggs under their HUGE dome shaped webs. These eggs are soft and white and are the size of a beach ball! When their mother lays her eggs there can be as many as 100! But these eggs are very dangerous. Not for what they can do, but what they hold within them. A baby Acromantula is just as dangerous as a grown one. Which is why the Ministry of Magic has made them a Class A Non-Tradable Good. Harry and his friends had a few run-ins with Acromantulas on their journey as well. Aragog is one of the most famous Acromantula known. Aragog lived in the Forbidden Forest for many years. Hagrid later brought in another Acromantula to make Aragog not as lonely. That’s how Mosag came about. The two then populated the forbidden forest with many offspring. But something about this colony is different than others. The colony in the Forbidden Forest is special in the sense that they respected Ruebus Hagrid so much; they would not seek out human flesh, well unless it came to them. This unusual behavior makes that colony so very different and interesting. But it's still a safe bet to stay away from Acromantulas. They can cause a lot of trouble.

"Werewolves"

Okay, I know your preconceptions. “Oh no, now were going into sparkle fairies and butterflies.” Well, I don't know about you, but I'm not. I'm here to tell you about the creature the Werewolf. This creature was originally from Northern Europe, even though they are nowadays found worldwide. (Not just in Forks, Washington...) Let's talk about how you can tell if you are looking at a Werewolf or simply a plain ol' wolf. You can tell if it’s a Werewolf by its pupil shape, a very fluffy tail, along with its snout shape. Humans can ONLY turn into Werewolves once another Werewolf bites you. If you are bitten by a Werewolf you then will have the illness called Lycanthropy. It's sad to say there is no cure for this, though there is a potion that can make the transformation easier. Oh wait, I've forgotten to tell you about the transformation. Well once a month when the moon is full a person who has been bitten by a Werewolf takes a horrible transformation into a Werewolf. In this time the person will seek out prey, humans. NOW back to the potion part. There is the Wolfsbane Potion that makes the transformation easier on people who have been bitten. The Wolfbane's Potion was created by a man named Damocles. You may have heard of his nephew named Marcus Belby. Well this potion is so revolutionary that Damocles was awarded an Order or Merlin for his work.

Now who can tell me if a Werewolf is in the Beast or Being Division? Anyone? If it seems like a tricky question, that’s because it is. There is much debate over which section it should be classified as. The Ministry has always tried to regulate Werewolves. How so you ask? Well there is a Werewolf registry (That nobody uses.) But there was also a Werewolf Capture Unit. These two sections were both under the Beast Division at the Ministry. But at the same time there was a little section called the Werewolf Support Services. But this section was not under the Beast Division. This section was under the Being Division. So it’s really debatable. As the old saying goes, “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.”

"Quintaped"

Here’s a creature most people don't know a lot about. It's the Quintaped! First let’s talk about what a Quintaped looks like. In a way it looks like a five legged spider. It’s very short and it has very thick, red hair covering its body. Now at the end of each of those five legs it has is a club foot. So walking can be a problem for these creatures. Now what makes these creatures so dangerous? Well, it’s because the Quintapeds have a taste for humans. So what better rating than XXXXX for a human eater? These creatures live on a isle. That isle is on the northern tip of Scotland. It's called the Isle of Drear and it has been made unplottable because of the dangers that lie there. Just like the Basilisk, this creature has a crazy and weird way of its coming about. There is a story that has been told on how these creatures were made. Here, let me tell you it. Once upon a time there once lived a pretty princess in a tall castle. Umm that doesn't sound right. Ohhh, now I remember it. There once were two wizarding families living on the Isle of Drear before the Quintaped was created. Those two wizarding family names were the McCliverts and the MacBoons. Now these two families’ leaders had a bit too much to drink one night and they began to duel. The MacBoon family leader, in his drunken stuper, killed the McClivert's family leader. These created turmoil on the Isle. Well one night the McClivert's decided to get revenge. They crept up around the MacBoon's house and began transfiguring the entire family. The MacBoons became what we know as the Quintaped. Well the MacBoons wouldn't go down without a fight. With their new human eating form, the MacBoon family ate, yes they ATE, the entire McClivert family. Soon there wasn't a human left on the Isle. So with no one able to hold a wand, the MacBoon family would forever remain their creature selves. Now you would think that if they wanted to become human again they would let the Ministry of Magic help them out. Well, the MacBoon clan has pretty much resisted the Ministry and will not let them get anywhere near them. So with that story done you'll understand why their nickname is a Hairy MacBoon. Well since such little is known about these little creatures, I've told you all that I can! So it's time for homework!

"Chimaera"

This time around we are going to talk about the Chimaera. What is a Chimaera? This beast is a very rare creature that originated in Greece. This creature is actually made up of 3 different creatures. Starting at its head, and working our way down. The Chimaera's head is in the form of a lion. The body of one resembles a goat, and the tail of this beast is that of a dragon. These creatures lay eggs which have been given the classification of Class A- Non-Tradable Good. Why are their eggs given such a high rating? That’s because this beast is one to not be messed with. The Chimaera has the reputation of being a blood-thirsty creature who gives no mercy to anyone who crosses its path. Sound like a good reason to give the Chimaera a XXXXX rating now doesn't it? So a Chimaera egg isn't the thing you want sitting around when it’s about to hatch. Well, unless you want to be its lunch. Now being the horribly vicious beast they are, some people felt the need to go and try and kill them. Well let's just say that usually doesn't work out so well...But there has been one recorded slaying of a Chimaera that was actually successful. Well, Karma can back for that wizard. As he was returning from his mission that was successful, his exhaustion got the best of him. The wizard who had just slayed a Chimaera couldn’t hold onto his flying horse any longer. The wizard fell from the horse and plummeted to his death. So just goes to show that you shouldn't mess with a Chimaera! They apparently get their revenge even from the grave.

"Nundu"

Now let's talk about the most dangerous beast known to the wizarding world. Its name is Cassandra Lobiesk! I mean the Nundu. Now if you were to go to look for this beast, first of all I would recommend you get someone to diagnose your insanity. But I guess you would also like to know they live in East Africa. Now unlike the Chimaera the Nundu is not made up of more than one animal. It is a single animal that looks very much like a massive leopard. Now despite its massive size the Nundu can creep around the African jungles without making a noise. Now what makes this beast so dangerous is the Nundu's breath. What's so dangerous about its breath? Well, the breath of a Nundu carries diseases and has been known to carry through villages of East Africa and wipe out their entire population. Anyone have a breath mint to give to a Nundu? Now that we know how dangerous this creature is and what makes it dangerous, don't be thinking you can go capture one by yourself. No, no, no. Experienced wizards have better luck stunning a Dragon than a Nundu. Yes, Dragons have been stunned by about 10 wizards. Nundu's on the other hand have been stunned by no less than 100 wizards at once! So I do NOT recommend you and your friends go looking for one of these creatures. Well, unless you like horrible diseases.

"Lethifold"

What is a Lethifold? Well, a Lethifold's appearance might fall a little flat for some of you! (I really need to stop making horrible jokes). Well a Lethifold looks like flat black cloak. (This fact contributes to the Lethifold's nickname, the Living Shroud) A Lethifold is about a half an inch thick, but it is usually thicker if it has recently had a meal. This creature floats across the ground in the middle of the night looking for its prey. What is its prey you ask? It's humans of course! Why wouldn't a XXXXX rated creature have a taste for humans? So while people are sleeping peacefully, a Lethifold silently creeps under their bedroom door and makes their way to the person's bed. Then it’s quite simple. The Lethifold hops in bed and smothers the person in their sleep and then eats them. So sleep with one eye open tonight and hope a Lethifold doesn't eat you!!

Let's talk about some people have experienced some Lethifold attacks! First let's start with Miss Janus Thickney! This woman mysteriously vanished! Or, well not so mysteriously. One night Miss Thickney wrote a note and left it at her bedside table. It read, "oh no a Lethifold's got me I'm suffocating." Well, people believed this note and she had just become a victim of a Lethifold attack! But, it turns out she had just left 5 miles outside of town in a local pub named the Green Dragon.

How about someone who actually encountered an attack and SURVIVED! It was a wizard by the name of Flavius Belby! This wizard is credited for finding the method of defeating a Lethifold attack. It was 1782 in Papa New Guinea. Mr. Belby was on his vacation when one night a Lethifold slipped under his bedroom door and tried to attack him. After trying multiple charms and spells with no avail, Belby was just about to be the Lethifolds next meal until he performed the Patronus Charm. He had saved himself with his fully formed Patronus. So if you ever encounter a Lethifold, you had better hope you have some good memories saved up! Because you'll need them if you want to see the next day!

"Manticore"

Our next creature’s rarity makes telling you about it quite difficult! It's a Manticore! This XXXX rated beast is similar to a Chimaera, but not quite exactly the same. This creature too is made up of three different creatures and is also from Greece. What are these three creatures you ask? It's a head of a man, a body of a lion, and a tail of a scorpion. Quite scary I tell you! This creature has its rating because of its deadly sting from its tail. What else is there to tell about a Manticore? Well, it's said that whenever a Manticore eats prey it makes a low, soft, crooning noise. There is something else that makes this creature so valuable. Its hide is known to repel most charms and spells. So watch out! It's dangerous to be around one of these beasts!

"Kelpie"

Well lets talk about an Irish and British demon. This time the demon looks like a horse with bulrushes for a mane most of the time, but it can easily change it form to hide in its environment. Now you should be very aware around these creatures. They lure people onto their backs then dive down into a deep lake or river and then eat the rider leaving only a few bits of the rider floating on top of the water. To over come these beast you must get a bridle over it and secure it with a placement charm. A Kelpie is then powerless to you.

"Yeti"

It is also known as Bigfoot and the Abominable Snowman. It is believed that the Yeti is in the Troll family, but nobody can get close enough to see for sure. It is found mostly in Tibet. It stands at roughly 15 feet and has long pure white hairs all over its body. The Yeti is dangerous because it will eat anything that comes in its path. The one thing the Yeti fears is fire. Though many skilled wizards might be able to scare it off.

"Merpeople"

These creatures are also known as Sirens, Selkies, and Merrows. But what are these creatures? Muggles know them as mermaids. But these creatures are more than just lovely maidens that sit on rocks and crash boats with their beautiful songs. Merepeople live throughout the world and have a highly organized way of life even though they are secretive like centaurs. They also have a their own
language, Mermish, in which few witches/wizards have mastered. Merepeople declined the status of Being because they like Beast more. The oldest Merepeople are the Sirens from Greece. Though there are Irish Merepeople known as Selkies. These Merepeople tend to be a little less on the good looking side. But all Merepeople share the same common love for music.

"Runespoor"

Runespoor are basically a three headed snake. (A one headed snake is bad enough but this one has 3) The Runespoor began in a small little African country called Burkina Faso. Now because of its Livid Orange with black stripes its very easy to spot. So Burkina Faso's Ministry has made unplottable forest to house these creatures. Now these creatures aren't very aggressive considering that only 1 head is venomous. That is the right head. Now each head serves its own purpose. The Left head is the planner. It decides where it will move and what it will do next. The middle head is the dreamer. It sits there and imagines beautiful visions. The right head (The venomous one) is the critic. That head will comment about what the other two heads are doing. Runespoors don't tend to live very long because they usually end up fighting each other. But they can commonly be seen missing the right head because the other two teamed up to bite the right head off. Its time for the nasty fact of the day! Runespoors produce their eggs through their mouths. (I told you nasty fact of the day.) They are the only known creature to do that. These eggs are worth a lot of money and are used in some potions.

"Sea Serpent"

RUN! ITS A HORRIBLE SEA SERPENT! Actually, don't! Sea Serpent have a bad reputation, but you know there is no known account of a human being killed by one of these creatures. Yes they can be terribly scary but their looks are a lot worse than they really are. These creatures have been known to reach all the way up to 100 feet in length! They have horse-like heads with a long snake like body that is usually green in color because of algae or other plant life in either the Atlantic or Pacific Ocean, but sea serpents have also been spotted in the Mediterranean sea. So if you ever see large "hills" in one of those bodies of water, you probably just saw a sea serpent.

"Grindylow"

Grindylows are water demons. They are pale green in colour, are typically on the smaller side, and have horns. Their regular diet is algae, fish, and other small sea creatures, but they are not afraid to eat humans if the opportunity arises. Currently, Grindylows have only been domesticated or controlled by Merpeople. Grindylows are very aggressive towards witches, wizards, and Muggles.

"Hags"

Savage beings that appear like ugly, old witches with many warts. They have rudimentary magic skills and have a preference for eating children and raw liver. However, the Ministry of Magic classifies them as beings, and as such, it is possible to encounter one out in the Wizarding World, such as in Knockturn Alley.

Now there are some super rare dark creatures having very dark magical capabilities. Some are believed to be mythical too....

"Mord Wraiths"

They were human servants of The Warlock Lord who recovered and were subverted by the Ildatch.

Mord Wraith, a Gnome term for Black Walker, was given to these successors to the Skull Bearers. The Mord Wraiths were feared throughout the lands for tales of their power: men's minds destroyed, bodies blackened by fire, and the ability to move without a trace. The only opposition to them was the Druid Allanon, who tried and failed to penetrate the Maelmord they had created around the Ildatch.

The Mord Wraiths continued to pursue and deter the efforts of Brin Ohmsford and Jair Ohmsford. However, they were destroyed when the Ildatch disintegrated.

The Mord Wraiths had the appearance of tall men in black cloaks whose magic appeared in the form of red fire. At times they carried staffs of burnished witch wood, such as when they summoned a Kraken at Capaal. This incarnaton of the servants of the Ildatch were called "Black Walkers" due to the changes the Ildatch made to them. The last creatures controlled by the Druid Brona were made using the Ildatch into flying beasts called Skull Bearers. The Ildatch on its own choose to only slightly change the humans who were left after Brona was destroyed.

"Skull-bearers"

They were Druids once upon a time, but they were subverted by the Ildatch along with Brona, who would later become the Warlock Lord. They "sacrificed their humanity"to become "winged black destroyers"; but in doing this, they tied themselves to their master, the , and became his "dread minions". As a result, when he died as a result of Shea Ohmsford using the Sword of Shannara, the were slain with him.

"Muten"

Mutens are a type of dark creature in the Four Lands. They are described as large, lumpy, black, and Troll-like in shape. It is known that they lack feelings and first appeared as servants to the Warlock Lord. In Tanequil, Kermadec, Maturen of the Trolls of Taupo Rough, states that they are the Trolls' worst enemy. Mutens were conjured back into the world as servants of the Mord Wraiths and then again as servants of the Druids under Shadea a'Ru.

"Once-Men"

These were the Demons' foot soldiers during the end of the great wars when the world was in ruins and all semblances of governments across the world had collapsed leaving it in anarchy.

"Maelmord"

The Maelmord was a living forest, created by the Mord Wraiths. It was created in order to protect the Ildatch from all who were not Mord Wraiths. It was semi-sentient, and was powerful enough that even Allanon did not feel that he could pass through it.

"Feeders"

Shadowy creatures that lurked on the edges of people's lives, lapped up the energy given off by the expenditure of emotions. The darker and stronger the emotions, the greater the number of who gathered to feast. Parasitic beings who responded to their instincts, they did not judge and they did not make choices. Most humans never saw them, except when death came violently and unexpectedly, and they were the last image to register before the lights went out for good. Only those like Nest, who were born with magic themselves, knew there were out there.

There are many more to discover from the places where there is no light........

There are a few Plants in this list too which includes...

"Devil's Snare"

This plant moves on its own and will constrict or strangle anything in its surrounding environment that it can reach, or anything that happens to touch it. Struggling and resistance causes the devil's snare to exert greater force and constrict faster. They resemble the harmless Flitterbloom with long, soft tendrils. Relaxing may cause the devil's snare to release its grip on the victim, and the plant is afraid of bright light and heat; it will freeze in bright light and recoil from heat. This plant is typically used to protect things, but could be used for dark purposes as well. For example, Broderick Bode, an Unspeakable for the Ministry of Magic, was imperiused into attempting to steal a prophecy in the Department of Mysteries. He failed and ended up a comatose patient in St. Mungo's, and a Death Eater sent him a potted Devil's Snare before he could recover and warn people. One of the Healer's mistook the plant for a Flitterbloom, and thus the plant was able to complete its job and silence Bode by asphyxiating him.

"Venomous Tentacula"

The venomous tentacula is a green, spikey, toothed plant with mobile vines or tendrils that it uses to grab prey. They are venomous, obviously, and they have deadly spines. They have large, eyeless "heads" with fangs (much like those of Venus Fly-traps). Their bite injects their venom into its victim and can be fatal.
