Chapter 5
How do I begin classes (enroll)?
You may have enrolled already when prompted when you made your account but if you did not:
Click on ‘Courses’ in the header bar at the top of the page or ‘Explore Courses’ below if on your home feed to be take to the course catalogue.
Select the year of the courses you’d like to take by clicking on the button on the right – you are now free to take any classes you like, in any order (classes are written as far as 4th year now), however to officially graduate a year certain class requirements must be met (see under ‘Advancing Years’).
Select a course, then press one of the enroll buttons to join.

Back to FAQ

How do I take classes?
After enrolling you can begin the lessons – click on the title of a lesson to open the drop down, then select ‘Open this Lesson.’
Read the lesson, then have a go at the assignments on the right at the top of the page.
You can also change lessons by clicking on, for example, ‘HERB-101 Lessons’.
Some classes may require a textbook, these can be found in the library (see under ‘Using the Library’).

Back to FAQ

Do I have to do classes in order? Do I have to take classes at all?
Classes are now open concept, you can take any class of any year you want, you are not restricted to doing them in order. You don’t have to do classes at all if you don’t want to, they’re just for fun. However, if you would like the label of 2nd year student, etc., then you must still complete the required courses to advance.

Back to FAQ

What are Prehistoric Creature Feature, Hogwarts Novel Writing Week and Games Week?
These are fun temporary extra classes, you don’t need to do them to advance and they don’t count as official electives, they just get you extra house points.

Back to FAQ

How do I earn House Points?
House points are earned through homework assignments (100% = 10 points, 79% = 7 points).

Back to FAQ

How long until my quiz/assignment/essay is graded?
Quizzes without short answer questions are marked automatically
Essays and quizzes with short answer questions are marked by Prefects/PAs
(The time it takes for your work to be marked will vary, currently expect to wait days to weeks)
You should receive a notification when marked. Your marks can be viewed in your gradebook.

Back to FAQ

Can I retake an assignment? How do I appeal?
You can’t do either of these things at the moment, look for these features in the future.
New students should know that these features permit some assignments to be retaken if the professor has chosen to allow it. Appeals let you contest a given assignment; if you have scored lower than 80% you may submit an appeal and a Head Student or Professor will review it. Appeals should have a valid reason and be polite and the grade may be raised (or left as it was). Rude appeals may result in a lower mark.

Back to FAQ

Where can I see my grades? (Gradebooks)
In your gradebook, when in a class to the lower right you will see a button marked, for example ‘My HERB-101 Gradebook.’
Gradebooks do not currently give your average for your class, you can calculate this yourself by averaging your marks on all required assignments (extra credit does not count towards your grade).

Back to FAQ

Do I have to do Extra Credit? Can I come back and do it later?
Extra Credit Assignments are not required; you may complete them if you wish. They will earn you more house points but will not contribute to your grade.
You can still come back later and do EC after completing the course, just re-enroll.

Back to FAQ

What’s this ‘Additional Notes’ section after assignments?
As advertised, it’s for notes or comments you may have on an assignment, perhaps you found a spelling error or something. Leave it blank otherwise.

Back to FAQ

It says I need to use a discussion board. Where is that? [Charms and Herbology]
The discussion boards were a feature that will likely not return but lessons have not been edited to remove this reference. For assignments asking you to post something there, the general consensus is that it is acceptable to say that you have posted it when asked, even though you cannot.

Back to FAQ

How do I drop a course?
With the handy ‘Withdraw from Course’ button you’ll find as you enter a course page.

Back to FAQ

How do I advance years?
Currently the ability to mark courses complete and advance years is not available, however the requirements are as follows:
To move to 2nd year you must complete all required assignments of the 7 core courses a final average of at least 70% (Astronomy, Charms, DADA, Herbology, HoM, Potions, Transfiguration). Once all assignments have been returned to you, you can mark the course complete and once all 7 are done, can advance to 2nd year.
To move to 3rd year you must complete all required assignments of the 7 core courses and of 2 permanent elective courses (choose between Alchemy, Ancient Runes, CoMC, Divination).

Back to FAQ

What year can you go up to?/Why is there nothing under year 6 and 7 classes?
Classes currently go to year 4, with year 5 on the way.

Back to FAQ

How do I insert an image or submit a file for homework?
For images –upload them to some picture sharing site (tinypic, tumblr, photobucket, postimage, etc.), if they’re not already online, then submit the link in the essay box.
If you wish to create a presentation for an assignment may I suggest using Google Presentations or Prezi (both will allow you to create powerpoint-esque presentations that can be easily submitted for grading).
If you have a file on your computer you wish to submit, upload it to your Google Drive and be sure to change the share settings so the link is public (as in, anyone with the link can view).

Back to FAQ

How do I become a Prefect (Professors Assistant/PA), Head Girl/Boy, Professor?
PA’s assist profs with grading assignments. When profs are looking for more they generally post about it (and may also post to the student lounge or forums) with a link to an application form. PA’s generally need to have some free-time, good grammar and have at least completed the 1st year of the class they want to PA for (including the extra credit).
Head Girls/Boys have the same duties as PAs but may also review appeals, etc. A prof may create an application form or may choose from among their PAs.
Sometimes a professor application may open up, it will be posted about (may also be posted to the lounge or forums).
